Episode 27: Our Second PiFcast, featuring Love is Chemicals [34:22m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download
Hello friends,
This week, we’re pleased to post our second PiFcast, our special series of episodes made in collaboration with Playing in Fog. This week, we headed over to the Inner Sunset to meet up with Playing in Fog’s Deb Zeller and our featured band Love is Chemicals, an indie-pop-rock band from San Francisco. Nate, Courtney, Nick and Steve told us about how they came together as a band, the making of their self-titled record, and some oppressive strobe-lighting they encountered on the road. Deb also offered some helpful advice about how to develop a tour as a band in the Bay Area. In addition to the chatting, you’ll also hear three songs from Love is Chemicals and a brand-new unreleased song from the band!
Pick up a copy of Love is Chemicals directly from the Near Earth Objects label or on iTunes!
Love is Chemicals is headlining the next Playing in Fog Presents show. We’re going to be there and you should be too:
Thursday August 31st
The Make-Out Room
9pm, with our old friends Peloton and Dora Flood.
And remember to head back to the Make-Out Room on Wednesday, September 6th for our benefit show for Playing in Fog. More information about that show here and more news about the online auction coming soon!
Thanks for listening!
The Bay Bridged presents a benefit for Playing in Fog!
August 17, 2006

Let all your friends and family know! It’s the first Bay Bridged presents show!
20 Minute Loop
Tomihira
Wednesday, September 6
Make-Out Room, 9PM, $8
On Wednesday, September 6th, The Bay Bridged will host a benefit concert for Playing in Fog at San Francisco’s Make-Out Room. For the last six years, Playing in Fog has served as one of the Bay Area’s best resources on the web for information about the San Francisco indie music scene, as well as the consistently fantastic “Playing in Fog Presentsâ€? shows, a monthly showcase for the best acts in indie music. Recently, Playing in Fog was fined for violating San Francisco’s flyering laws despite not actually posting any flyers. Because the flyers said “Playing in Fog Presents”, Playing in Fog’s Deb Zeller found herself a victim of the city ordinance’s “rebuttable presumption”, which finds a person guilty of violating the flyering laws unless they can prove otherwise at an administrative hearing. In the process of unsuccessfully fighting these fines at the hearing, Playing in Fog incurred significant legal fees. All proceeds from this show will go toward a legal fund established to pay for these fines and fees.
The show features three of San Francisco’s best indie rock bands:
The Invisible Cities “is a San Francisco-based band that makes incandescent rough-around- the-edges sometimes-quiet sometimesloud rocknroll pop music with wiry guitars and boy/girl harmonies. Watertown is their first full-length record, born of late-night, half-remembered reflections about half-remembered places.” They were also voted Best Indie Pop band by the readers of the San Francisco Bay Guardian in 2005!
20 Minute Loop was voted Catchiest Band in 2005 by the East Bay Express: “…it’s immediately evident that their band, 20 Minute Loop, has just unloaded the most absurdly addictive angst-pop record to emerge from the East Bay in, well, actually, ever. Yawn + House = Explosion is a ridiculously fantastic mash-up of pop hooks, slide guitar riffs, and dueling boy/girl vocals that either intertwine perfectly or clash magnificently.”
Tomihira can be pretty much summed up from this great description written up in the SF Examiner: “Local shoegazers Tomihira use a moody musical palette a la Joy Division and My Bloody Valentine, with hues ranging from sullen purple to heartbroken violet to just-plain-blue, to create indie-stained portraits of longing and desire.”
Lastly, we can now announce our Playing in Fog Benefit Auctions! They are all on eBay so check them out and let the bidding begin! All of the proceeds from this auction will go towards Playing in Fog’s Legal Fund. For more information about this cause, click here.

Episode 26: August’s Monthly Local Mix
August 15, 2006

Hello again from The Bay Bridged!
This week we’re bringing you another installment of our Monthly Local Mix series, spotlighting a group of bands we haven’t yet featured alongside some old friends of the show. Big things are happening here at The Bay Bridged HQ, as evidenced by the brand new banner designed by Scott Barry, the first The Bay Bridged Artist-in-Residence. Every month, we’re going to spotlight a different local artist that you should know about, and ask them to put their own spin on The Bay Bridged site. You should definitely check out more of Scott’s work at Birdstand. Additional kudos to him for suggesting the idea! If you’d like to become the next AiR, drop us a line here. Similarly, if you’re in a band or work with a band in the Bay Area, fill out our request form to Get Heard. Several of the bands included this week did and are now a part of the Bay Bridged family.
We hope you enjoy this week’s mix. As we mention in this week’s show, there’s more big stuff on the horizon for us, stuff we will be posting here in the next few days. As always, thanks for listening!
About this week’s bands:
Dark Side of the Cop and Social Studies are playing together tomorrow, August 16th at the Make-Out Room. The Bay Bridged will definitely be there, so you should swing by and check out a night of great local music!
20 Minute Loop has a show coming up that we’re particularly excited about. Listen to the episode to find out why!
Jake Mann has a show on August 28th at Mama Buzz Cafe in Oakland.

Episode 25: Petracovich
August 8, 2006

Hello again everyone,
Last week, we were privileged to sit down with Jessica Peters, who records and performs as Petracovich, at Base Studio, home of some very talented local artists. Petracovich’s style of folktronica blends electronic and acoustic elements to create rich, textured songs that are simultaneously ambient and pop.
We chatted with her about working with collaborators in the studio and on stage, her experiences on her two national tours, and the songwriting process in which she’s currently involved. Also, in this episode you can hear a great live track Jessica gave to us which was recorded at KZSU for the weekly Thursday show, Eran Mukamel.
You can pick up either of Petracovich’s wonderful albums at her web site or on iTunes. Her Myspace page can be found here.
Jessica also has a show coming up next week:
Thursday, August 17th
12 Galaxies
9 pm, with The Love X Nowhere and Audio Out Send
Thanks for listening!
Episode 24: The Herms
August 1, 2006

Over the weekend, we had the pleasure of sitting down at the Latin American Club and chatting with Matt and Chris, two-thirds of San Francisco’s The Herms. Not only do these guys make some uber-catchy indie pop/rock tunes, but they are also very, very funny.
Over the course of the interview, the guys discussed beverages that the band has been compared to, the band’s humble beginnings in UC Berkeley’s co-ops, and shared some, well, let’s just call them “memorable” stories from the road. This was one of our most enjoyable interviews to date and we hope you enjoy it as well.
The Herms have one show currently announced:
Thursday, September 21st
Cafe du Nord
9:00pm
Matt Lutz also has solo project you should check out which will be playing a show next week:
Thursday August 10th
Cafe du Nord
9:00pm
For more information about the band, head on over to their website or their MySpace page. To pick up a copy of their excellent full-length debut Record Machine, or their debut ep The Herms Get Firm, head on over to their record label Jackpine Social Club or pick Record Machine up from iTunes.
See you next week!
