the hair the tv the baby & the band

September 27, 2007

imperial.jpg

It’s been several years since we last heard any rumblings from Imperial Teen, the San Francisco indie-noise-pop band whose male-female vocals, smart wry lyrics and addictive melodic pop got them significant acclaim. The band’s last studio album On came out five years ago, but after reuniting earlier this year, they’ve released a new album titled the hair the tv the baby & the band on Merge Records. Now Imperial Teen’s embarking on a national tour to support the new record, which has been receiving some strong reviews, and they have two San Francisco performances this weekend.

According to their web site, which has an update on what everyone’s been up to since the band went on hiatus (hint: the new album title is a summary of sorts), two of the four members still live in the Bay Area, including Will Schwartz, who you may also know as the frontman of Hey Willpower, while the others reside in the Los Angeles area.

You can hear three songs from the new album at Imperial Teen’s MySpace page. Catch the band this Saturday night:

Saturday, September 29th
Bottom of the Hill
w/ Parker Brothers and Bella
9pm, $12

The band will also be playing at the Folsom Street Fair on Sunday at 4pm at the 12th Street Stage.

If you’re looking for a great way to spend Friday night, you should head over to The Independent and catch one of our favorites, Magic Bullets, playing with Brazil’s Bonde de Role. 7×7 Magazine recently included the Bullets in its “2007 Hot Twenty Under Forty,” , a well-deserved honor indeed.

In other Magic Bullets news, a live album from the band’s July 22nd performance at The Echo should be released imminently by Spaceland Recordings. Head over to the label’s web site to see a video preview and stream tracks from the CD, which includes a number of new songs expected to be on the Bullets’ next album. That’s right–while a CHILD but in life yet a DOCTOR in love continues to draw the band accolades, they’ve also posted a song from their next album, tentatively titled Young Man’s Fancy, over at their MySpace page.

The details on Friday’s show below:

Friday, September 28th
The Independent
w/ Bonde Do Role, Juice Boxxx, DJ Omar (Popscene)
9pm, $13

Tartufi & Silian Rail Score Films for the Madcat Women’s Film Festival

September 26, 2007

mc11.jpg

Today marks the end of the 11th Annual Madcat International Women’s Film Festival. This two week long festival strives to showcase the work of women who have taken a new approach to visual storytelling. It’s a unique endeavor, curating film programs tackling a variety of themes that extend beyond what might traditionally be considered womens’ issues.

In this vein, tonight’s program, shown outdoors at El Rio, will showcase 12 short silent films created around the theme “So Loud It’s Silent”. The evening won’t be silent, though, as Bay Bridged alumni Tartufi and Silian Rail have been brought on board to score and perform the soundtracks to a few of the short films! We’re very excited to hear how each band’s unique approach to songwriting will work alongside a new visual component.

If all of that greatness wasn’t enough to get you to check this out, Silian Rail and Tartufi will be performing together for one of the films as a new supergroup, Junk as a Ship! I know, we couldn’t believe it either when we found out.

More details and short synopses of each of the films can be found on Madcat’s web site. There will be free BBQ at 6:30pm for all in attendance and the films will start promptly at 8:30pm. Tickets are $7-20 (sliding scale/cash only) and the event is 21+.

And of course, take a listen to our feature shows on both of these bands!

Episode 83: September 2007 Monthly Mix

This week’s episode of our podcast is our latest Monthly Mix, our chance to bring you a whole bunch of songs by some great bands we’ve been listening to lately:

We just received Le Fits Sportif, the new album from Oakland’s Le Fits and it’s some stellar indie pop reminiscent in some ways of the Elephant 6 bands, with an effortless and engaging quirkiness layered on top of sweet catchy melodies. Head on over to the band’s MySpace page and label UFI Records to hear more from the new record.

Okay, we screwed up and missed the CD release show for Mist and Mast‘s self-titled debut album last Saturday night at Bottom of the Hill. The CD is an exciting mix of indie rock with a slight Byrds-ish feel, from a young band led by Jason Lakis, formerly the guitarist and singer for The Red Thread. Check out their MySpace page for more music and you can pick the CD up on iTunes.

We honestly don’t know all that much about The Storyboards, but we received their debut album Stagger & Sway recently and we’re quite appreciative. The band is the project of San Francisco’s John Foust, who has a strong sense of melodic songwriting and incorporates a number of different rock and pop sounds across the CD. Head to The Storyboards’ web site and MySpace page to hear some more songs and pick up the new album.

That we’ve included another song from Caves in this month’s mix (see also: June ’07 Mix) is a testament to how strong an album Here Is Vision is. Seriously, head on over to Caves’ MySpace page and take a listen to some more tunes. The band’s next show is Sunday, October 7th at the Hemlock Tavern with It’s a Secret to Everybody and Polite Sleeper.

Tempo No Tempo‘s last EP The Get Down was a terrific release that we had playing on repeat for quite a while. This week, were pleased to include a brand new song from the band’s upcoming EP Repetition, out November 13th on Double Negative Records. You can pre-order the EP and listen to more new songs at the band’s MySpace page. Catch them this Friday, September 28th at the Edinburgh Castle with My Second Surprise, Better Than Aliens, and Red Rocket.

We’re a little baffled that it’s taken so long to include music by the excellent Papercuts on our podcast. The band’s latest album, Can’t Go Back, out on Gnomonsong, has been receiving a multitude of glowing reviews for its thoughtful, well-crafted pop sound. Visit the band’s MySpace page for more and we’ll keep you posted about any upcoming shows.

Blammos first caught our attention by winning the Noise Pop Cinemasports video contest with this video, but don’t let their skill with funny videos distract from the great pop music. In this episode, we’ve included the band’s new single “How Do You Know?” off of their upcoming full length album. See them Wednesday, October 3rd at the Elbo Room with French Miami, Paper Tiger (CD Release), Dangermaker and DJ Baeau. MySpace page. The band was also featured on the most recent episode of Pacific Noise.

The May Fire close our set with our favorite song from last year’s debut album Right and Wrong, which they’ve since followed with two EPs out of a planned trilogy. Check out the video for the song we’ve included titled “Red Eye”. The band will display their tight rock sound at a couple of shows in October: at the Red Devil Lounge on October 10th and the Elbo Room on the 26th. Get more info about the shows and more music at their MySpace page.

The Return of Finest Dearest

September 24, 2007

finest.jpg

Click here to listen! Click to listen to our feature episode on Finest Dearest!

When we spoke with Finest Dearest last year over beers at Thee Parkside, we unwittingly caught the band at a significant turning point. While the group’s debut Pacemaker EP and energetic live performances had caught our attention with their sweet indie pop, the band was in the midst of significantly reinventing its sound following the departure of its cello player and the addition of AJ Dickerson on bass.

It’s been a pleasure watching the band evolve since then, ratcheting up the rock quotient in its sound while maintaining the strong melodic element from the earlier work. The excellent Off Sides 7″ was the first recorded example of the new sound, with the second their contribution to The Bay Bridged, Volume 1 compilation. Still, we’ve been waiting for Finest Dearest’s first full length album for a while now, and it’s great news that the band is now finishing up nine days in the studio working on the record.

To celebrate the completion of their studio time, Finest Dearest has a headlining performance this Thursday night at Cafe du Nord, alongside The New Up and The Dont’s. Swing on by the band’s MySpace page or web site to hear more tunes before the show.

The show starts at 8:30pm and is $8.

The Matinees this Wednesday

September 24, 2007

matinee.jpg

Click here to listen! Click to listen to our Monthly Mix for August 2007!

We’ve really been enjoying Sleepy Seeds, the debut album from The Matinees since we recieved the CD a few months back. As the song in last month’s mix suggests, it’s a collection of catchy, eclectic pop with great vocals from this San Francisco duo. We’re excited to report that the band is playing this Wednesday night at the Hemlock Tavern, kicking off what should be a great night of local music.

Second on the bill is Pancho Sanza, featuring Patrick Abernethy (formerly of Beulah and currently of Rogue Wave). Joe had some kind words to say about the group’s folk-pop blend when he caught them a few weeks back.

Headlining is n. Lannon, also known as Nyles Lannon and also formerly a member of Film School. Lannon has a brand new album out called Pressure and, from the sounds on his web site and MySpace page, on Wednesday he’ll offer a sweet mix of folk, electronic and indie-rock elements that should compliment the other two acts very well.

Wednesday’s show starts at 9:30pm and is $6.
