Tough choices on Thursday

The holiday season invariably creates all sorts of tough choices, particularly when it comes to conflicting holiday parties. This Thursday night brings at least three excellent choices for great live entertainment. Whatever your fancy, there’s definitely some great music to be seen and heard:

At the Rickshaw Stop, it’s the Tricycle Records Holiday Party, featuring the garage noir stylings of The Blacks, along with Veil Veil Vanish and DJ DMAP. The show starts at 8:30pm and is $8.

Free Holiday Giveaway #2: Thread Productions
December 12, 2007
As a thank you to our readers this holiday season, we asked some off our favorite local record labels to create special mp3 samplers to showcase their rosters. Every Wednesday this month, we will be posting a different sampler from a great local label. They’re all free, but you will only be able to download them for a limited time, so get to it!
This week: Thread Productions
Last week: Three Ring Records
We continue our free holiday giveaway series this week with Dragon Slayers, Volume 2, the latest compilation from the good people at Thread Productions, a collective of bands whose collaborative work-ethic is matched by the consistently high quality of their musical output. This duality was recognized by the East Bay Express, who named them the “Best Band Collective” of 2007 and stated:
In the Bay Area indie music market — crowded with talent yet comparatively devoid of industry — it can be difficult to ascend beyond the ranks of the critically lauded and financially challenged. [Thread's bands] opted to take matters into their own hands last September by forming a music cooperative designed to pool resources and elevate its members’ profiles…It’s a selfless aspiration toward the greater good, in which the success of the unit becomes the success of the individuals — a plan both practical and idealistic.
For this mix, the collective’s five principal members–Tartufi, Low Red Land, Birds & Batteries, Silian Rail, and Sky Pilots–invited their friends and fellow local bands to join them, making for a great eclectic mix of familiar and new faces.
You can find out more information about Thread Productions and all of their bands at their MySpace page. This sampler is free to download for a limited time only!

Episode 94: 60 Watt Kid
December 11, 2007

Stream the episode:
This week’s featured band is 60 Watt Kid, a San Francisco trio whose self-titled full length debut, recently released on Absolutely Kosher Records, alternately calls to mind sounds ranging from psychedelic pop to early rock and roll to synth-touched folk. In an age where experimental pastiche and damaged art-pop are increasingly familiar, this band has a unique ability to blend and balance their different elements, likely due in equal parts to their conscious refusal to develop a singular sound as well as the three members’ seasoned musicianship.
While the band’s origins are clouded in a certain mystery, it’s clear that a great deal of chemistry has developed between vocalist/guitarist/synth player Kevin Litrow (ex-Dance Disaster Movement), guitarist/synth player Derek Thomas, and percussionist Garrett Pierce (a well-respected singer-songwriter in his own right). The group’s liberated attitude extends to their lyrics as well, as songs alternately confront the realities of living in the city, like needing a job or getting a car, and the desire to escape that chaos and travel down a forgotten country road or return home.
All of these different musical and lyrical impulses can make for a challenging listen, but there’s a bounty of great ideas within the band’s frequently complex and multilayered approach. We sat down with Kevin at The Bay Bridged Studio, and learned about the group’s unique approach to songwriting and interesting musical philosophy. We’ve also got four songs from 60 Watt Kid in the episode.
The band’s next show is at the Absolutely Kosher/Kork Agency Holiday Party:
Friday, December 13th
Hemlock Tavern
with Neil Hamburger and Chris Garneau
9:30pm, $12
Check out more 60 Watt Kid at the band’s web site and MySpace page. You can pick up the self-titled album from Absolutely Kosher Records and on iTunes.
Thanks for listening!

Thursday: Ex-Boyfriends/Audio Out Send Dual CD Release Party
December 10, 2007
There’s quite the show over at Bottom of the Hill this Thursday, as BAGeL Radio presents a dual CD release party for Ex-Boyfriends and Audio Out Send.

Click to listen to our feature episode on Ex-Boyfriends!
We interviewed Ex-Boyfriends last year as part of an hour-long podcast also featuring Music for Animals. At that time, the trio was continuing to receive strong reviews for their debut album Dear John, and they eventually found themselves as runners-up in Spin Magazine’s “Artist of the Year” competition. The band’s sophomore release In With came out last week on Absolutely Kosher Records and the songs we’ve heard indicate it picks up on all of the winning tendencies that made their last album an excellent mix of rock and power pop.

Thursday’s show is also a CD release party for Oakland’s Audio Out Send, who are celebrating the release of their new album Sharpen the Hours. As the band explained to us in our recent interview, the new CD represents a certain departure from the band’s more textured prior works. Sharpen the Hours is currently a limited hand-numbered release, with each copy featuring individualized artwork.
