Record Store Day This Saturday

This Saturday marks Record Store Day – a day of appreciation for record stores across the country and beyond. Not surprisingly kicked off by the very-vocally-anti-downloading Metallica at Rasputin in Mountain View, it will be a day to celebrate the great things record stores and the music they foster have done for all of our lives. Here is a list of some of the local record stores that are participating:
1-2-3-4 Go! Records – Oakland
Amoeba Records – SF and Berkeley
Creative Music Emporium – SF
Dimple Records – Sacramento
Down Home Music – Berkeley
Hot Dog Music – Sacramento
Medium Rare Music – SF
Metamusic Records – Santa Cruz
R5 Records – Sacramento
Rasputin Music – Berkeley and Mountain View
Streetlight Records – San Jose
Vinyl Solution Records – San Mateo
Check the store nearest you for events. At least try to pay your local record store a visit, and if you see something that strikes your fancy, buy it. On the events side, notably, Jello Biafra will be at Amoeba San Francisco and R5 Records in Sac is having a gigantic party with local bands and shwag. Oh yeah, and Metallica.

I stopped by Aquarius to get the new Sun Kil Moon a few days back.
Me: “Are you guys doing anything for Record Store Day?”
Clerk: “Huh?”
Me: “It’s this national thing. It’s next weekend.”
Clerk: “Oh. I guess not.”
At least they had the album you were looking for.
I went to Streetlight in San Jose a few weeks ago and couldn’t find two albums – Not in their inventory. Probably a good thing because I saved about $6 each after buying on Amazon. The cost of gas to drive to Santa Cruz evened things back out.
As I walked out, I had this depressing thought that someday I’ll be telling my children that we actually went to STORES to buy music when I was younger…walking uphill both ways in the snow.
I went to Streetlight in Santa Cruz…not SJ.
