My First Earthquake Debut EP, Show Sunday
May 28, 2008

Local indie pop group My First Earthquake will celebrate the release of their new EP Tremors this Sunday at the Make-Out Room.
The new EP comes after many months of the band playing live shows, refining their sound and figuring out which songs to feature on their debut EP. Singer Rebecca Bortman explained, “Since we’re a pretty new band we’ve definitely taken a lot of queues from our fans and people who come to our shows.” In the end, they put together a collection of six songs that fit together well.
My First Earthquake - “Teleprompt” from Tremors
For this first project, the band went all over San Francisco taking advantage of any free studio space they could, the most accessible of which was keyboardist/bassist/vocalist Chad Thornton’s wood-paneled living room. From there, the band passed the album on to Patrick Elliot, who mixed the album, but not without lots of input from the band.

Birdmonster Shows With Superdrag, New Album Looms
May 28, 2008

Birdmonster is busy preparing for the release of their new album From the Mountain to the Sea, which comes out Aug. 5. In the meantime, they have released two great new songs on their MySpace page and will play two nights at Bottom of the Hill this Sunday and Monday, June 1 and 2, with Superdrag.
The new songs have a more polished feel than from their previous album No Midnight, both in musical execution and recording quality. The two new songs also reflect a slightly lighter side of the Birdmonster we know, revealing a depth and complexity that was just under the surface before. Check out the new songs on the band’s MySpace page.
Episode 116: May 2008 Monthly Mix
May 27, 2008

This month’s mix episode features songs from nine great Bay Area bands. More about all of the bands below:
Local garage-rockers The Mantles (”Trust”) have been receiving quite a bit of good press for their debut 7″ on Dulc-i-tone Records. The group has a number of shows coming up in June and July, with their next at the Hemlock Tavern on June 13th.
Last of the Blacksmiths (”At An Early Hour”) recently celebrated the release of their new album entitled Young Family Song and the CD is a worthy follow-up to the group’s excellent 2005 debut. The band will be at Sophia’s in Davis on July 11th.
Local synth-poppers Sweetie (”Saturdays”) celebrate the release of their brand new Saturdays EP, out today on local label Gold Robot Records. You can check out another song from the record over at Macktronic.
Bay Area Scenecast Part 1 on Cokemachineglow
May 26, 2008

Late last year The Bay Bridged was approached by Cokemachineglow to jointly put together a Scenecast featuring what we considered to be some of the best music the Bay Area has to offer. Together we sat down with Andre Perry and after several E-mails and many months we narrowed the episode down to 14 great bands. As you will read below, given the wealth of great music from the Bay Area this will be the first Scenecast in a series dedicated to promoting music from the area. Be sure to stay tuned to Cokemachineglow in the future for the other installments in this great series.

BAY AREA SCENECAST PART ONE
Curated by Andre Perry (of CMG) and Ben Van Houten and Christian Cunningham (of the Bay Bridged Podcast)
Several months ago I came up with the idea of continuing Cokemachineglow’s periodic Scenecast series by contributing an entry on the Bay Area music scene. So I teamed up with some of the area’s best music bloggers, The Bay Bridged, and together we put together a tracklist of artists and songs that represent the Bay Area. But given the distance of a few months, all I can say now is: what the hell was I thinking? You see, while many cities would like to claim a diverse scene, San Francisco and its surrounding areas really do represent a vast range of musical projects. It truly is the scene of a thousand faces. There’s so much going on it’s kind of mind numbing: from the indie-rockers, to the noise-rockers, the country folk revivalists, the hippie-folk purists, the garage rockers, the Goth rockers, the minimalist techno heads, the minimalist house heads, the jazzy-house heads, the diva house heads, the drum n’ bass fiends, the electro freaks, the found-sound geeks, the alt. country dudes, the punk marching band enthusiasts, the left-field hip-hop crews, the hyphy hip-hop crews, the post-rockers, the glitch-rockers, the prog-rockers, the dream-poppers and space-rockers, the “we only use recording gear from 1970 and before” rockers, the “we only use recording gear made after 2000” rockers, and the “we’ll mix one or more of the above genres” folks, there’s a lot to take in.
