May 23, 2008

Last weekend, the Great American Music Hall hosted the Rose Hill Collective’s release of their second compilation, Rose Hill Collective, Volume 2. Saturday night’s show included performances by Built for the Sea, Overview, Silian Rail, The Hundred Days, and Cold Hot Crash, along with DJ sets by members of LoveLikeFire and Live 105 DJ “Miles the Intern”.

We’ve got some great photos from this event after the jump.

Tempo No Tempo Poster
Just got an e-mail from Double Negative Records‘ Disco Shawn about a show he’s DJing at this Friday at The Knockout. In addition to Tempo No Tempo and The Splinters, the show will feature a performance by Lets, a new project featuring Satomi from Deerhoof and Tomo from Tussle and Hey Willpower. No word what the new group sounds like, but with that duo involved, the possibilities are limitless.

Review: Girls, Someone Still Loves You, Boris Yeltsin, Port O’Brien

May 21, 2008

Girls
So maybe going to the Rickshaw Stop to catch the latest stop on the Someone Still Loves You, Boris Yeltsin/Port O’Brien tour wasn’t the best way to beat the heat last Wednesday (5/14/08). It actually felt substantially hotter inside the club and no amount of cold, delicious Hunter’s Point Porter seemed to help as we waited for show opener Girls, the much-blogged-about San Francisco duo of Christopher Owens and Chet JR White. Apparently Owens has also collaborated with Ariel Pink in the group Holy Shit, but there isn’t much other information out there about this relatively new group. Still, World Famous in SF has been championing the band for a while, and the group’s periodically-updated MySpace page has showcased a number of great songs over the past few months, so I was really looking forward to the band’s performance.

The set was, in short, scary good. The live Girls band, a six person group with three guitarists, gave the group’s lo-fi gems an electricity that accentuated some winning melodies. While the singer’s voice sounded a lot like Elvis Costello (a lot more live than on record in fact), the band’s sound drifted between fuzzy retro-pop stompers and some more ornate psych-soaked jams. I’ve seen reference to the Television Personalities elsewhere, and I think that’s accurate to the extent it implies a mutual appreciation for Buddy Holly and gettin’ weird. According to the Guardian, this was surprisingly only the group’s fourth live show ever, and the band’s performance did periodically feel a little too loose, at the expense of some immediacy. With fingers crossed that they work out any remaining kinks, I’m looking forward to the group’s upcoming 7″ on True Panther later this year.

Win tickets to Outside Lands!

Anyone\'s Guess Contest

Scott from Anyone’s Guess just posted a friendly reminder that there are still several days to enter his contest to win three-day passes to the Outside Lands Festival.

You do have to make an original video or song about climate change to enter (details on his site), but there are still several days left, and that’s a pretty sweet prize.

Actionslacks Play Only Show of 2008 This Sunday

May 21, 2008

Actionslacks

Actionslacks, the prolific Berkeley rock band that formed in 1994, will play their only show of 2008 this Sunday, May 25 at Cafe du Nord with Parker Brothers and Brad Brooks.

This show is a kick-off of sorts as the band returns to Tiny Telephone Studios, where they’ve recorded before, for their first recording project since their 2004 album Full Upright Position. The show is sure to include lots of new songs, and a few familiar ones.

To give you an idea of the scale of this band, here’s a brief description from their website: “The band has released 5 albums on 4 different national labels, had 12 different members, logged over 50,000 miles, played hundreds of shows, contributed music to numerous film and television projects, and generally endured all manner of threats and pitfalls that haunt any band who dares to shoulder the Mantle of Rock.” The current formation of the band is Marty Kelly, Chuck Lindo, Ross Murray and Tim Scanlin.

Episode 115: Geographer

Geographer
This week’s episode of The Bay Bridged Podcast is presented by KQED Interactive.

This week, our podcast features San Francisco indie rockers Geographer, a guitar-cello-drums trio gaining buzz around the Bay for their dynamic indie pop sound. The band’s frequently hushed vocals, personal lyrics and intimate melodies betray singer/songwriter Mike Deni’s past involvement in the local folk scene, through which he met collaborators like Kacey Johansing (who sings lead vocals on several songs) and developed some of the songs that have since evolved into Geographer’s seriously anthemic music.

That evolution can be attributed to Deni’s love of synths and the impressive chops of Berklee-trained bandmates Nathan Blaz (cello, electronics) and Brian Ostreicher (drums). As we learned during our interview with Mike and Nathan, they’ve been influenced by compositional electronic music, an inspiration evident in the group’s dynamic crescendos and synth layering. The guys are continuing to explore these elements as they further develop their sound.
