This week’s episode is presented by KQED Interactive and sponsored by Bloomsday Rising.

This week’s podcast features San Francisco experimental pop sextet maus haus, a band that ranks as one of the most promising young groups in Bay Area indie music. We were intrigued when we first heard that Aaron Weiss (ex-Social Studies) and Jason Kick (The Lovely Public, Social Studies) were working on a new project, and the band’s self-distributed demos–from which we included songs here and here–set early expectations quite high with a unique sound that eschewed guitars for a pastiche-driven mix of synthesizers, classical instruments and drum machines. Mike Relm’s New Album Spectacle Out Now

October 27, 2008

Mike Relm, San Francisco’s mash-up prince, released his debut original album Spectacle last Tuesday on Radio Fried Records. Relm has made a name for himself nationally as a wicked live turntablist, mashup artist (audio and video) and even film director. He is well known for his innovative blend of songs, as well as his quirky realtime mashups of popular songs from Bjork to the Charlie Brown theme song. His latest adventure was providing music and on-screen entertainment for Tony Hawk’s Boom Boom Huck Jam across the country. [More...]

Local Label Profile: Absolutely Kosher Records

October 27, 2008

Cory Brown hasn’t bought new jeans in three years.

I am not sure if he is making a joke when he states this at the Bandwidth Music and Technology Conference, though he says it with a laugh. I don’t think the founder of local label Absolutely Kosher is trying explicitly to give us intimate details of his personal life. Instead, he’s giving a personal touch when describing an industry that has seen much change and is currently in a difficult state. For an industry that was once built on CDs, magazine reviews and college radio airplay, the old models have since been replaced by MP3s, blogs and a generation of listeners comfortable not paying for their musical product. Deerhoof: Offend Maggie

October 27, 2008

I’ll probably get myself in trouble for saying that I think Offend Maggie is Deerhoof‘s best project yet. While many critics have been quick to point out that the band has settled into a pattern of similar-sounding experimental music after 10 albums, this project brings a kind of lightness and optimism that is quite new for this band. Many of their previous efforts have necessitated the listener have a certain, shall we say, sonic open-mindedness. [More...]

The Black Keys, Dr. Dog Ticket Giveaway!

October 24, 2008

Next week will have all of us running from venue to venue catching some amazing shows as October comes to a close. One of the non-local shows that looks to be amazing is going to be over at the Fillmore on Thursday, October 30th with The Black Keys and Dr. Dog. We’ve seen both of these bands in the past before – and have loved every minute. I might even claim that Dr. Dog was the highlight of my 2008 Treasure Island Music Festival experience so this show will not disappoint.

First Annual Indian Summer Jam

October 24, 2008

This Sunday, Oct. 26th, Dolorata are playing FREE OF CHARGE with fellow local bands, Th’ Moonlight Sexy, The Departed and Mostro, at the first annual Indian Summer Jam. A band with an amazingly unique view on Rock and Roll and blues, they have been said to “recall the sensibility of the rock bands of the 70’s, while simultaneously existing in the present tense.” This female quintet has played at just about every great San Francisco venue and have been praised for living up to opening for Iggy and The Stooges. Check out their video for “You’ve Gotta Want It” and listen to a few of their tracks from their album Believer at their MySpace page. [More...]

Review: Wiretap Anniversary at Thee Parkside Oct. 19

October 23, 2008

This was an all-day affair at Thee Parkside, an old-hat venue for some of you, I’d imagine. I like a good and greasy dink, tho, and whenever a performer busts out the Mitre, you know it’s gonna go off
faithfully, like a skypiece from a tonsured Monk. [More...]
