The Airborne Toxic Event with The Henry Clay People and Rademacher @ The Bottom of the Hill, 2/13/09

February 20, 2009

The rhythm section of LA’s own The Henry Clay People, Mike (drums) and Jonathan (bass), were all smiles out back after their set, having warmed up the stage quite nicely for headliner The Airborne Toxic Event. Packed house, good times, good times, and with six more weeks to go–well, five and a half by now–along a tour that stretches from the North to the Southwest, it’s unlikely that smile’ll be getting swallowed anytime soon. Hearing Mike and Jonathan taunt lead singer and guitarist Joey Siara as he now begins to fux with the methods of the proverbial “back door man” (i.e. one for whom it is necessary to come and go discretely lest he be mobbed by innumerable lusty, adoring thongs) was good eating for this reviewer, for sure.

Of ATE (that’s Airborne Toxic Event) let me say I like the song “Gasoline” and I  wonder if they’ll soon hate playing it and “Sometime Around Midnight” along with it and are they annoyed by people saying they like those songs and want to hear them over and over and over and over; but all that’s prolix, anyway, and indirect, and discursive. I know. And anyways what I heard of their other stuff sounded pretty cool for status quo indie fare, I admit, and truth be told I had to leave a little early–prior engagements–but not unconvinced that I’d be willing to swap out some  Modest Mouse to make room in the old 100-disc changer for Airborne’s hotly regarded, self-titled debut.

A B & the Sea Moves to the Bay, to Play Noise Pop

February 18, 2009

AB & the Sea

Hailing from Wisconsin, A B & the Sea have officially moved to San Francisco. After having dipped their feet into the Bay Area music scene, they will bring their infectious indie pop to Noise Pop this year, playing next Friday, Feb. 27 at Bottom of the Hill with Dear and the Headlights (AZ), Kinch (AZ) and Big Light.

AB & the Sea – “Suzie”

A B & the Sea bring back some old-fashioned surf-pop music that even references California (though… “southern California,” hmm). The guitar effects, cymbal-heavy drum beats and multi-part harmonies are catchy and nostalgic. The band brings these classic elements together with the noticeable influence of modern indie pop bands like Death Cab and The Shins.

The band will release a debut full-length in April, which is being produced by Chris Chu of The Morning Benders and recorded at Different Fur Studios in SF. In March they will open for Marcy Playground at the Red Devil Lounge.

Their Noise Pop show begins at 8:30 and is $10 advance, $12 at the door.

AC Newman Ticket Giveaway!

AC Newman

New Pornographers frontman A.C. Newman is back with his second solo album, Get Guilty, and fans of chamber power-pop will find much to enjoy from the new release, out now on Matador Records. To my ears, it’s a little more stately than his previous album The Slow Wonder, with a lot of strong songwriting to boot.

This is the second of two podcast episodes spotlighting the diverse mix of excellent bands playing during the 2009 Noise Pop Music Festival. We have twelve great local and touring bands in the episode, all of whom are performing during Noise Pop, which runs from February 24th to March 1st. You can listen to our first Noise Pop 2009 episode here.

LA indie pop band The Submarines (“Waiting for a War”) kick off the episode with a cover of a song by their current tourmates, The Morning Benders. Both bands will be co-headlining at Slim’s on Friday, February 27th, with The Mumlers and Rademacher supporting.

Originally from Wasilla, Alaska (yes, Sarah Palin’s Wasilla) and now based in Portland, Portugal. The Man (“Out And In And In And Out”) headline a great show during Noise Pop. On Saturday, February 28th, they’ll be playing with Girls, and Love is Chemicals at Cafe Du Nord.

Thao Nguyen (“Beat [Health, Life, and Fire]“) plays solo during Noise Pop at a show we’re pleased to present on Thursday, February 26th at the Swedish American Hall. David Dondero, Sean Smith, and Colossal Yes also perform.

San Francisco singer-songwriter Donovan Quinn (“Holy Agent”) also performs at the Swedish American Hall during the festival. Bob Mould headlines the Saturday, February 28th show, with additional performances from Mark Eitzel and Jason Finazzo. This show is also presented by The Bay Bridged.

Currently working on a second album, San Francisco’s Sugar and Gold (“Slice Me Nice”) will be performing at a Noise Pop Happy Hour show hosted by The Bay Bridged. The show also features maus haus and Tempo No Tempo. As with all of the Happy Hours, the show’s at Benders.

Sholi Releases Debut Full-Length, Plays Noise Pop and SXSW

February 17, 2009

Sholi

For the past year or so, Sholi has brought us endless news and exciting occurrences, mostly in the form of tidbits – signing to a new record label, releasing a 3-song EP and other singles, touring with Iron and Wine, helping out with the Obama campaign, etc. The latest is so far the pinnacle – their debut, self-titled full length breaks today, Feb. 17, on Touch and Go/Quarterstick Records. The band will celebrate their record release during Noise Pop, next Sat., Feb. 28 at Bottom of the Hill.

The album was produced by Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier at New, Improved Studios in Oakland. Dusted Magazine described Sholi in terms of “indie rock truisms, a la the Walkmen, and a traditional side to handle the ethnic material like Morricone might have, with a lot of instrumental flash and a noble, heads-up presence.” You can still download their free, 3-track digital EP, Dreams Before People (as a zip file), of which the title track is simply breathtaking.

You can purchase the record from Touch and Go’s website. The record release show will also include The Dead Trees (Portland), Everest (LA) and Jake Mann. The show starts at 9pm and costs $12. Sholi will also be playing The Bay Area Takeover at SXSW in Austin, as well as a Touch and Go Records Showcase.
