We is Shore Dedicated CD Release Party @ Rickshaw Stop

March 10, 2009

We is Shore Dedicated
are throwing a CD release party for their third album, RhinoceRoses/Rabbit Noose, released by Huevo Imaginary Records. They’ll be performing at the Rickshaw Stop this Thursday, March 12, and the show starts at 8pm.

Following Rainbo Donuts, which won The Deli SF’s CD of the month, they aren’t holding anything back. Sam Tristin, from San Francisco’s The Ebb and Flow, fronts this new experimental Latin-influenced sound, and is setting course for broad musical horizons. There’s balladeering and classically crooning vocals, electronic noise and soul influence on the track “Time of the Wolves,” which is influenced by Henke. Inspired by Mexican regional beats and rhythms, “Caetano Veloso,” is a song named after the widely acclaimed and admired “Bob Dylan of Brazil.”

Indie Mart this Sunday

March Indie Mart

So I didn’t realize exactly what I was walking into when I went to the Indie Mart on a whim several months back. I am someone who doesn’t know quite what to do with “nice things,” but aspires to gain this knowledge, so the fact that The Independent was jam-packed with local designers and craftspeople proved a bit overwhelming. Still, there was a ton of cool stuff for sale at very reasonable prices, with good music and cheap Little Star and bloody marys adding up to a really enjoyable shopping experience. [More...]

KUSF

It’s a tough time for record stores and music vendors of all kinds. And that’s what makes events like KUSF’s Rock-n-Swap so awesome! Rock-n-Swap is one of the biggest regularly held music swaps in California. You can find all kinds of musical treasures, from vinyl, CDs, DVDs, posters, books, paraphernalia and more.

Proceeds benefit San Francisco’s non-commercial radio station, KUSF 90.3fm. The event takes place this Sunday, March 8 at the USF campus in McLaren Hall. Check out the website for a map and directions. USF students get in for free, otherwise general admission is $3, and hours are from 10am to 3pm. Or you can choose to get to the good stuff first, and pay for the early bird special, which is $20 and runs from 6am to 10am.

It’s a great event, benefiting a fantastic alternative radio station, so check it out!

Family Matinee at Bottom of the Hill w/No Age and White Circle Crime Club

My first show in San Francisco was an all ages show at Bottom of the Hill. Coming back for this afternoon show to close out my own personal Noise Pop experience brought things full circle in a sense. Making the trek from the East Bay was a bit daunting at first, as even with all my magical powers, I couldn’t keep God’s tears at bay (translation: it was dumping rain).

My hesitation almost ruined the day for me, as I barely made it as the last badgeholder to be let in. Whew! The house was packed with everybody having to turn sideways to try and navigate through the crowd.

This was definitely a family affair, with 6 and 7-year-olds sitting atop the edge of the bar. It’s always awesome to see a young kid bobbing their head up and down, rocking out to some good music. There is still hope for future generations. [More...]

Single Syllable First Names – Bob and Mark at the Swedish, Keep it Classy Folks

Mark Eitzel
Words by Jake Butler

I had been to Cafe Du Nord numerous times, and had always heard rumor of this mysterious “Swedish American Hall” that lie above us in the strange world above street level just past the Church St. MUNI stop.

I walk into a sea of seated concertgoers who would likely give up their first born before their seat. There’s probably 70 chairs or so in the center, with limited seating along the borders of both the base level and the balcony at the Swedish American Music Hall. I instantly notice that there is an abundance of blazers, makeup, dresses, and straight up classy folks. This was balanced out by the sleeve-tatted, leather jacket, new school fans of good music. You had a spread of folks spanning from the young, Husker Du-story-driven attendees to the Sugar-fan, solo-Bob Mould fan base. It was quite a collection and I believe everyone got their fill.

Mark Eitzel kicked off the evening for me. My sister f-in’ loves lounge music so as soon as Eitzel hit those pipes, I texted her about some stuff she had to check out. [More...]
