Record Store Day tomorrow!

April 17, 2009

Record Store Day

As you have hopefully heard by now, Saturday is Record Store Day, when bands and labels of all genres team up with shops around the country to offer some special musical incentives to get you off your computer and into an actual store to buy music that’s been pressed onto a physical medium. A few years ago that idea of music you could hold in your hands didn’t sound all that nuts and some of us–ahem–still can’t switch to making many purchases through iTunes. All of this is to say why not stop by your local record store tomorrow and see if there’s anything that piques your interest?

Head to RecordStoreDay.com to check out a full list of the exclusive releases you’ll be able to find in stores tomorrow.

Many of the Bay Area’s record stores are having special events throughout the day. Amoeba has DJ sets from John Vanderslice, Kelley Stoltz, Kylee of Loquat, Aesop Rock, and more in San Francisco and Yoni Wolf (Why?) and others in Berkeley. Rasputin has Silversun Pickups performing at 4pm in their Berkeley store and Mister Loveless playing in Concord at 5pm.

Trainwreck Riders – A first hint of The Perch

Trainwreck Riders have returned with the first song from their upcoming third album The Perch, out May 12th on Alive Records. “Safety of a Back” is more layered than I’d have expected from the group, but it’s grounded in a couple of Riders hallmarks: Pete Frauenfelder’s earnest vocals and the band’s signature energy.

The guys are performing tonight at the Hemlock Tavern, with Saturn Returns and Top Critters, and they always put on a great show. The show’s at 9:30pm and is $8. You can also listen to our podcast interview with the band some time back here.

Progress in the ABC/venue conflict?

April 16, 2009

Bottom of the Hill
Is a sigh of relief in order? The Chronicle’s Marisa Lagos wrote a follow-up today to her eye-opening piece in Saturday’s paper that examined the state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control’s seemingly arbitrary use of its expansive power in challenging the liquor licenses of some of the City’s most established and well-regarded clubs, including Bottom of the Hill, the Great American Music Hall and Cafe Du Nord (and as we learned via a comment on our post, the DNA Lounge as well).

State Sen. Mark Leno and Alcoholic and Beverage Control chief Steve Hardy met on Monday to discuss the ABC’s efforts, and Lagos reports that Hardy “made a commitment to working toward a resolution” with legislators and local business owners:

“It was a positive meeting,” said Leno, D-San Francisco. “(Hardy) came out wanting to work with me … and said he is anything but interested in seeing businesses close.”

Leno said Hardy acknowledged that ABC officials currently have broad leeway in interpreting licensing requirements. The two men discussed writing legislation that would clarify the requirements for these kinds of businesses or possibly create a new type of license.

Read the full article for more details. It’s definitely too early to consider this resolved, but it’s encouraging to see things moving in a positive direction. (Hat tip: @ipickmynose)

Videos: Tartufi acoustic, Jen Grady solo at the Ghost Mansion

April 16, 2009

The guys over at the Ghost Mansion have been putting on small get-togethers for the last year or so at their Mission District home featuring some of the best Bay Area bands performing in their living room. We have been fortunate to attend several of these events and every one amazes me with the talent performing and the community support.

Last week’s gathering was no different featuring a solo performance from Jen Grady — whose swooning cello and vocals can be found accompanying several local bands including Emily Jane White and Adam Stephens — and Tartufi performing acoustic. Yes, you heard me right – acoustic.

Fortunately, we have proof of each of the performances below. Enjoy the videos:

Tax Day Party tonight at the Hemlock: Blue Rabbit, Chelsea Wolfe & Tippy Canoe

Chelsea Wolfe
The Deli SF says, “never mind the taxman-let’s live it up while there’s living to be had!” with a whimsical “Tax Day Party” at The Hemlock tonight: Blue Rabbit, Sacramento’s Chelsea Wolfe and Tippy Canoe (Oakland).

Blue Rabbit embarks on dark, serene musical journeys thanks to cello, harp and a thick layer of female voices. They reside and play often here in the city, and the feeling is that you’ll leave this song on repeat once you’ve heard it: Blue Rabbit – Sleep

Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound – “Two Birds”; new album out now

Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound
Okay, so I’m unfortunately too late to plug the band’s CD release show (which was earlier this month at El Rio), but San Francisco psych-rock trio Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound‘s third album When Sweet Sleep Returned is out now on Tee Pee Records. The album was produced by Tim Green at his Louder Studios here in the City, and features a diverse instrumental palette and some great engaging songs. “Two Birds” features harmonies from Brett Constatino and Evan Reese of Sleepy Sun and is a sweeping number that, like the best psychy-rock, paints an ambitious picture around its melodic core:
