We Be the Echo CD release at Hemlock this Friday (Updated with new mp3!)

We Be [the Echo] using the dark force to make good music

We be the Echo – “Wilhelm Scream Dream Team”

Hey, yourself. We Be the Echo is throwing a CD release at Hemlock this Friday (9pm, $7) with the well known producer Martin Bisi (NYC, worked with Brian Eno and Sonic Youth) as well as The Great Dictator (Portland).

I say they’s a rogue, dark-jedi threesome, mathrockers who have split from the Empire, taking their algebraic conscience with them. Put an abacus on your brain and again, bring your plugs, you, or else buy some when you get there. This is what your good friends at Wikipedia have to say about We Be the Echo:

“We Be the Echo is an American instrumental rock band from San Francisco. They play a blend of math rock, brutal prog, punk, jazz and heavy metal with dub influenced bass lines. The band’s sound is based on melodic and rhythmically challenging short songs that often incorporate shred guitar.” – Wikipedia

Whoever did the entry forgot to hyphenate “dub influenced” and forgot a comma after “challenging,” but whatever, that’s cool. It’s democratic enough, the above tidbit, but fails to recognize, however, that theirs are some of the most uncanny time-signature backflips you’ll find around town; also that Graeme is not sometimes, but always, a Master Shredder (on his TMNT) and that bassist Mike Stryker’s brand of funk is uber legit like D. Nowitski’s cannabis card.

Show Preview: Heavyweight Dub Champion @ the Independent, Thurs Jun 18

June 17, 2009

Coming to the Bay Area by way of Colorado, Heavyweight Dub Champion is not a sound, is not a band, and is definitely not a mere collection of human beings making inspiring music.  While HDC ecompasses all of these things, it is a mantra.

The mantra is simple: make public the paintings, poetry, music, and other artistic incarnations of the human and spiritual response to the disintegration of truth and spiritual awareness in a world gone mad.

Heavyweight Dub Champion – “Dawn”

These are, no doubt, some lofty goals, but with a supporting cast including KRS-One and A.P.O.S.T.L.E., among many others, HDC is definitely on the right track.  Their vision and intent may be intense for some, but these guys back it up with some of most super dank, heavy, and at times trance-inducing, dub hop you will hear.

With their modest beginnings in a log cabin in Colorado, you wouldn’t expect core members Resurrector, Patch, and Totter Todd to be so adept at bringing such an electronic heavy sound to life with a remarkably inviting appeal, but they pull it off.

Touring in support of their new album “Rise of the Champion Nation”, Heavyweight will be coming back to their home in the bay for a special show before the summer festival circuit hits.

If you’re looking to catch some great reggae, especially that of the dub/hip-hop blend, swing by the Independent, on Divisadero between Hayes and Grove, Thursday night to catch Heavyweight Dub Champion opening for Sly & Robbie.  Doors at 8:30pm, $25.

Review: Manicato @ Cafe du Nord 6/13

June 16, 2009

I am not going to say much more about Manicato’s performance this past Saturday (6/13) than can be seen here. The audience was certainly grooving, and this despite a less-than-stellar turnout; the band did well to combat what can sometimes be a stifling air of self-consciousness in the Du atmosphere, especially when the crowd’s a little thinner than it ought to be. No surprise, considering one cannot help but dance to their music; however awfully, you will shake it to the horns, improvised vocals by a father-son duo [soneros Israel y Cris Matos], the stuff of real romance and/but groovy as all get out, and very well studied across the board, percussion to melody to counterpint and back. Please enjoy the following photos, and head to Dolores park this Saturday to see these fine fellows perform. They go on around 3. Don’t miss ‘em.

Spaceheater opened the show, cool, liquid prog jazz and eventful improvisations from two tenors and barry sax. I missed Big Bkln. Red, an Apollo hero, whom I was told played a very tight set, as I was at the Makeout Room listening to Luis Alberto Urrea read. He, like Israel Matos of Manicato, speaks in favor of a new order “sin fronteras,” that is, without borders, and with no more ado and mucho mas que hacer here are the pics de Manicato from Saturday night.

Midweek shows: Shellac @ GAMH tomorrow, Thursday

June 16, 2009

Shellac - By Cassio Abreu
There are several interesting things about Shellac which might sway folks out to one of their double whammy nights at the Great American, tomorrow and Thursday (8pm, $16), with Arcwelder.

1. You think Hard Rock is cool: Todd Trainer will drum you to dance, while Steve Albini pierces your eardrums only long enough for Bob Weston’s bass to give you heart palpitations.

2. Rare Roadshow: The band tours when it wants. There hasn’t been a new record in two years, but that’s not necessary to get the noise-rock trio to leave the Midwest.

3. Recording Engineer Heroes: Albini and Weston have been adjusting mics and levels for years: In Utero, PJ Harvey’s Rid of Me and, the Pixies’ Surfer Rosa.

4. Accessible to Fans: Albini was once asked by a crowd member “why do you suck so much?” and he quickly assured him that it was because “your mom was busy.”

More information about the show is available from the venue; both nights Arcwelder will be supporting.

My First Earthquake: album release show Saturday @ Cafe Du Nord

June 16, 2009

My First Earthquake - Photo by Braden Kowitz
The members of San Francisco’s My First Earthquake come from very different backgrounds. Two members used to play in metal bands, one helped develop essential parts of the iPod, and the other used to play in a band with We Are Scientist’s Keith Murray. With so much experience and diversity, it is only natural that the group have taken it upon themselves to release their own debut album, Downstairs. Their record release show goes down Saturday at Cafe du Nord (9:30, $10) with Blue Rabbit and B and Not B.

myfirstearthquake-coolinthecoolway.mp3
My First Earthquake – “Cool in the Cool Way”

Downstairs is a display of the do-it-yourself spirit culminated. A notable track on the album is “Vow to Vowels.” With its catchy dance rhythm, organ melody, driving bass, and infectious vocals, one can’t help but get out their seat and shake it a little (or a lot). The whole album treks across the landscape of tight-synth induced dance pop, making a promise out of the four musicians abilities as a group. You can pick up the new album at the show.
