Sonya Cotton releases ‘Red River’ Friday at Noe Valley Ministry
July 31, 2009

Friday marks the release of local folk singer-songwriter Sonya Cotton‘s enchanting new full length, Red River. The album was recorded in Hyde Street Studios and features Cotton’s local backing ensemble: Anna Perlmutter (vocals, violin) Nick Stargu (classical guitar,) Gabe Dominguez (vocals, flute,) and Sean Jones (bass guitar). Of the sixteen guest musicians that contribute to Cotton’s lush soundscape are some big names, such as Ezra Lipp (Sean Hayes, Thao Nguyen). The album will surely please those interested in tales of the natural world, as Cotton even mentions the nuances of our city.Â
The record release show will take place at the Noe Valley Ministry (7pm, $5-15) with Reverent Sisters, Devotionals, and Honeybody Moonbee. For more information, visit Cotton’s website.Â

Counting down to Regional Bias: local art to swoon
July 30, 2009
In addition to four local bands, exclusive DJ sets and exciting giveaways, Regional Bias proudly features Bay Area artists as part of the celebration on Friday (7:30pm, $15). From sculpture and painting to screen printing and photography, local fine art in the $20-300 range will be available for the viewing and purchasing pleasure of our supporters.
Representing the CityArt Cooperative (located at 828 Valencia) is Hilary Williams, creator of delicate and elegant paintings, fabric sculptures and limited edition prints. She is a true Bay Arean — born and raised, then received her BA in Printmaking from California College of the Arts in Oakland. While the themes of her work vary, the intersection of the natural and built environment is explored in a collage-like manner, often using local references. Can you catch this one?

San Francisco resident Jamie Banes takes a technocultural approach, constructing out of industrial products: sheet metal, wire and lots of electronics. It’s uncertain (but likely) he’ll bring something to the fundraiser that moves, but if not, many of his paintings feature these sculptures as subjects (see below). Banes’ portfolio reflects a pursuit of “exploring what it means to be a living organism,” with some intriguing videos on his website of his sculptures. If you’ve seen Patrick Dougherty’s “The Upper Crust” twiggy formation in the Civic Center Plaza, know that Baines was on the installation team for that project.
In addition to Williams and Baines, artwork from Charlie Homo, Ethan Jamison, Jason Trinidad, and more will adorn the perimeter of the Verdi Club (2424 Mariposa). Regional Bias takes place this Friday from 7:30 pm to the mornin’.

Adam Stephens and The Finite Plain: Performing this Friday at Regional Bias
July 29, 2009
Adam Stephens, live at the Swedish American Hall, 9/25/2008
While you likely know Two Gallants, it would be understandable if you’re not familiar with 2Gs guitarist Adam Stephens‘ solo project. Not yet familiar, that is, as Stephens and his band The Finite Plain are currently working on a debut album that should be a doozy. We’re honored to host Adam and band at our Regional Bias fundraiser event this Friday night (more details and advanced tickets here), so that you can get the feeling I’ve had watching his band perform at Vetiver’s CD release party and down at SXSW. Simply put, Stephens is serving up nothing but hits: every song is a moving and compelling work, and he’s surrounded by some of the best bandmates one could want, including Jen Grady (known also as a solo artist and part of Emily Jane White and Garrett Pierce’s bands), whose warm vocals and cello buttress the raw humanity in Stephens’ pieces.

A Decent Animal relocates from the South, plays du Nord tonight
July 29, 2009

What, you don’t dance at shows? Tut tut. Maybe you’ve never tasted the earthen hash they call TV Mike and the Scarecrows? With one foot in the same Bay Area bayou that the Fogerty boys once trod, and the other foot in, well, the same Bay Area bayou that birthed The Dead, these mostly-Hoosier transplants aren’t afraid to stir up a barn-burner regardless of what hipster might be in earshot.
And speaking of transplants, headlining this night at Café du Nord (8pm, $10) are ex-South Carolinians A Decent Animal, whose own dark gumbo goes well with the likes of 16 Horsepower, Band of Horses, and, for that matter, Crazy Horse. As of press time the third band on tonight’s bill, an outfit calling themselves Thank You, had not provided any links to their music via the du Nord site. This means that it may or may not be the band on Thrill Jockey.
