Nnn. And Get Some: Emily Jane White and Miranda Lee Richards @ Du Nord from 7/20/09

July 23, 2009

Emily Jane White
not pictured here: singing cellist and singing violinist

Still hating yourself for abusing the ever available food-as-music trap in your journalism, Gus? Me too!

Have you ever had the Maple Pecan Granola from Trader Yo’s? She’s a good one, a really, really good one, let me tell you. And if I said to you on the bus or in line for the movies or at the ballpark eating franks, “Hey, you should try the Maple Pecan Granola” you might NOT just hurry off and go sample it right away just ’cause I said. Understandable; but, perhaps, then, a mental note be generated; and but see a brown box of Maple Pecan Granola from Trader’s Yo some time later and you may find yourself remembering how delicious you heard it was. And get some. Nnn.

This is how it was for me with Emily Jane White’s music. This name. Emily Jane White, like a shade on the milky lips of fashion’s favorite folksters; a crowd on a Monday night at Cafe Du Nord 7/20/09, young men and women of the Neo-Victorian Age saying, “Yes, Emily Jane White, she is good, isn’t she?” No, I expected nothing, save a grrrrrrreat goodness out of her. And behold, this was to be that uncommon Maple Pecan night–Emily Jane White–as she delivered roundly, from chopsy finger-picking to dynamic arrangements to taut, expectant lyricism and all the untapped potential for serial-toned ferocity in her careful comportment at the keys–a deep red-orange bobcat of a certain mellow stripe in black skirts, well, behaving, if I may. . . .

Jake Mann gives away the Valdez EP

Jake Mann Show Poster

Between his last album Daytime Ghost and his next release, Jake Mann has been releasing the “Sediment Series” of EPs, “Compiled ideas, musical tangents…the good stuff that didn’t make it onto an ‘official’ release.” While the first two have been limited edition CDrs, Jake’s giving away the new Valdez EP, featuring three new songs and a reworked “Our 1st Assumptions Were Correct” (from Daytime Ghost). Mann and band The Upper Hand (Aaron Bellamy on guitar and trumpet; Dan Baber on drums, percussion, and vocals) recorded the tracks with Max Hart (We Are Scientists, High Speed Scene) as they plot out their next full-length album.

Wallpaper. – Pool Party; Doodoo Face coming soon

Wallpaper. – “Pool Party”

How do Oakland electro-R&B-pop geniuses Wallpaper. find the time to breathe? The group’s debut full length Doodoo Face comes out September 22nd on Eenie Meenie, but they’ve been everywhere in recent months, with popular remixes of Das Racist‘s “Combination Pizza Hut & Taco Bell” and an autotuned take of Jay-Z’s “Death of Autotune”.

Recently, the group collaborated on a new song with Jacob Safari (The Mae Shi) and Kid Static. As Wallpaper.’s Ricky Reed describes:

Me and Jacob from The Mae Shi had been playing grab ass for a few months about collaborating on some music. So he finally sent me this freaky glitch reggaeton thing. I was in the studio late on a Saturday night chalk full of Red Bull and self loathing, wishing I was on top of the Standard Hotel LA gettin’ my ugly dude on. So I wrote “Pool Party.”

Geographer at Cafe Du Nord Thursday Night

July 22, 2009

There’s two parts to a great show – an awesome venue and awesome music. You’ll find both of those tomorrow night when Geographer plays Cafe Du Nord. An East Coast transplant, frontman Mike Deni brings some eclectic indie rock sounds with an always-on pop sensibility. Similarly, I’d be depriving you if I made no mention of Nathan Blaz’s always appropriate electric cello and the lone analog purest of the band (I’ve never seen him use a drum trigger of any sort), Brian Ostreicher on drums.

Throw in Cafe Du Nord, regularly offering good drink specials, and you’ve got a great date night for that indie chick or dude you’ve been eyeing. Just watch out for that first step, it’s a doozy.

Geographer performs with The Old-Fashioned Way, White Cloud, and 100 Swans at Cafe Du Nord on Thursday night. Doors at 9, $10.

Oakland’s MakeMe have a couple of upcoming shows to promote their brand new album House of Brakes. My current favorite song on the new record, “Matters”, features great vocal back-and-forth and some nice keyboard touches that build into an anthemic tidal wave of awesomeness.

The band’s official record release show is on Friday, July 31st at Amoeba Music in Berkeley. That free show starts at 6pm. They’ll also be opening for Future of the Left at Bottom of the Hill on Tuesday July 28th. If you head over to the MakeMeMakeYou.com, you can get four free songs from the album by signing up to their mailing list. Not a bad deal if you ask me.

RiP: A Remix Manifesto

July 21, 2009

Brent Gaylor

Don’t worry.  You’re not the only one confused by the landscape of laws surrounding sampling, DRM, remixing and similar music/new media issues.   Thankfully, web activist Brett Gaylor will be screening his recent film RiP: A Remix Manifesto at the Mezzanine Thursday, July 23rd. The film features hot-topic performer Girl Talk and attempts to demystify and explore current copyright and intellectual property law issues.

Girl Talk is the prime subject for the film.  The man behind the moniker, Greg Gillis, is a pioneer in the track-sampling arena, building his songs exclusively from the hooks, vocals and other building blocks of pop hits. While Gillis has become popular and critically acclaimed, the method has sparked considerable debate over the meaning and application of copyright law.

Following the film, Eclectic Method and local DJs Adrian & Mysterious D will be presenting live audio/video remixes for your viewing and listening pleasure. Mezzanine, 21+, $12 for SF Film Society members, $17 for non-members.  Co-presented by SFFS and Creative Commons.
