Judgment Day Record Release @ Bottom of the Hill

July 16, 2009

This may seem too obvious to point out, but a lot of metal bands involving classical instruments tend to focus heavily on the neo-classical elements of metal, sawing their way through one arpeggio after another. In recent years, cello-having heavy outfits like Priestbird and SF’s own Giant Squid have employed their bow-wranglers in a more atmospheric manner, capitalizing on the instrument’s distinctive timbre and the unexpected texture it provides in rock music. Oakland instrumental trio Judgment Day combine these two tendencies–brothers Anton and Lewis Patzner have arpeggio chops to spare on violin and cello, respectively, but they leaven the shredding with canny riff arrangements and an arsenal of face-melting pedal effects. The end result is a distinctly progressive, experimental take on the guitar-less metal band, taking full advantage of the strengths of the strings while pushing the sound in unexpected directions.

The Patzners are blessed with the rock’n'roll-sibling superpower of effortless interplay, and it’s easy to forget that there are only two melodic instruments at work. They are also prolific composers, keeping the songs interesting and varied to compensate for the lack of vocals. Drummer Jon Bush mostly stays out of the spotlight, though he sports the necessary chops and excels at the unusual task of anchoring a power trio with half a string quartet in it. The sheer weight of many songs comes as a surprise, along with the band’s ability to convincingly borrow the grooves and conventions of extant heavy music styles. Judgment Day are at their best when frantic, distorted riffing gives way to Anton Patzner’s haunting lead lines, before resolving again into the group’s distinctive beeswax thrash. [More...]

Agent Ribbons releases new 7″

July 15, 2009

Agent Ribbons - Photo by Jesse Vasquez

When the all-lady, Sacramento based trio Agent Ribbons isn’t busy touring with Camera Obscura, they’re tucked away in Placerville, CA recording.  This month, the fruits of their labor will be available in the form of a 7” release entitled Your Love is the Smallest Doll. The record is a prime example of Agent Ribbons’ style: melodic, slightly twangy folk-pop.  On most tracks, Natalie’s vocals recall country greats like Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn.  Staccato rhythms and accordion on the title track lend it the sound of a madcap drinking song.

You can pre-order Your Love is the Smallest Doll through Acuarela Records.

Agent Ribbons performs at The Knockout on Friday, July 24th, with Hard Place, Harry Merry and Franklin’s Mint. 9pm, $7, 21+

Dirty Projectors @ The Independent 7/7

Dirty Projectors
Photos by Nicole Browner

Sold out and packed early. The Dirty Projectors have proven themselves quite the draw as they tour in support of their latest album “Bitte Orca” (Domino). The Night started out normal enough. Few people walking it at their leisure,  but as opening band What’s Up took the stage a palatable sense of urgency filled the air. What’s Up played a purely instrumental set, mostly just bass, drums and keys. The sound was intricate, well-rehearsed, and totally free of standard form and meter. Formed in Sacramento, What’s up gained a following in the  capitol and surrounding regions before picking up and moving to Portland.  Now with their opening slot for the seemingly omnipresent Dirty Projectors and their subsequent European tour, it seems only a matter of time before these guy’s break into the main spotlight. Their music is undeniably catchy and without the hindrance of a vocalist their free to explore different songwriting structures.

What's Up

As the spaces between people on the floor got tighter and tighter, the Dirty Projectors’ founder/leading man Dave Longstreth took the stage with Angel Deradoorian to kick things off on a low-key note. They worked their way through “Two Doves” and then the rest of the band hit the stage.
