Media Friday: JV becomes Eclectic, Girls get Fadered, and new Thao and il gato

September 18, 2009

Fridays are for zoning out at work with some quality web-surfing, no? So let’s lasso in all the good media we’ve unearthed this week.

Above, John Vanderslice recently did a session with KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic”.

And we have a Girls appearance on FADER TV, in celebration of Album, officially out next week:

New tunes for your downloading pleasure include a fresh track from Thao and the Get Down Stay Down. It’s the title track off the band’s upcoming Know Better Learn Faster, out in October and available for pre-order now.

Finally, local folk-rock band il gato have been working on a new album. Here’s a preview that makes us want to hear more:

Jonathan Richman: upcoming Make-Out Room residency

September 17, 2009

Jonathan Richman
Indie elder statesman Jonathan Richman returns to the Make-Out Room next week for a four night residency from the 20th through the 23rd (all shows 8pm, $15). Jonathan and drummer Tommy Larkins recently produced singer-songwriter Vic Chesnutt’s upcoming album, Skitter On Take-Off, out October 6th. Richman and Larkins are expected to return to the studio soon to record the follow-up to 2008′s Because Her Beauty Is Raw and Wild, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

In the meantime, Richman picked a collection of his favorite songs recorded for Rounder Records. Vampire Girl: Essential Recordings comes out on Tuesday. And on October 6th, The Modern Lovers will be reissued on vinyl courtesy of 4 Men With Beards.

Goh Nakamura Explains the “Follow Your Whim” Tour and plays “Embarcadero Blues”

After JetBlue announced that they’d be selling a $599 all-you-can-fly pass for the month of September, Goh Nakamura and The Invisible Cities had an idea equal parts clever and ridiculous. Goh and the Cities bought the passes and booked the “Follow Your Whim” tour around JetBlue-servicing cities, with upcoming stops in Los Angeles, Seattle, and New York city after a first week of shows in Houston, Austin and Southern California.
