Alela Diane headlines at home @ Rickshaw 10/27

October 31, 2009

Alela Diane
Tuesday night saw a co-headlining bill at The Rickshaw Stop featuring Alela Diane and Marissa Nadler, who are currently on a US tour. When Diane came on it was as if she were playing to a living room of close friends — her banter possessed genuine and humble tones, as she chuckled at requests for songs she wasn’t sure if she remembered. Another tradition Diane can’t seem to shy away from is inviting her father to play her homecoming shows. Tom joked about being called down last minute, but lent an organic element to Diane’s textured folk traditionals by adding guitar, backup vocals and mandolin.

If a pop punk band can be legendary and not be named Blink 182, Shonen Knife is quite the candidate. Of all female and Japanese descent, Shonen Knife has been hopping continents the last couple of months; the full list of US shows can be found on their MySpace.

The Hi-Nobles
Former Mordred lead singer Scott Holderby teamed up with Avengers guitarist Greg Ingraham and others to form The Hi-Nobles, forgoing the metal and punk of their previous bands for a ’60s soul-influenced rock reminiscent of The Dirtbombs. Shake is the band’s first album. Here’s the title track:

Sleepy Sun, The Antlers @ The Independent Friday

October 29, 2009

Sleepy Sun headlines the Independent Friday night (9pm, $14), supported by an equally anticipated act, The Antlers(NYC) and Misty Mountain from Felton, CA.

The Antlers are a three-piece out of Brooklyn, and their record Hospice went first as a self-release until picked up by French Kiss earlier this year. Love from All Songs Considered (NPR), Pitchfork and Stereogum soon followed. “Bear” is a great representative sample of Hospice, which in itself is half ambient, half a dance number. The more rhythm-lacking measures are stabilized by high-energy parts that retreat back to a more familiar indie rock sound.

Sonny and the Sunsets – “Too Young To Burn”

With their first full length Tomorrow is Alright, Sonny and the Sunsets have created a simply wonderful West Coast pop album, led by the whimsical songwriting of Sonny Smith. Smith’s been a cult hero around the Bay for a while: Chuck Prophet formed a record label in order to release his 2006 solo album Fruitvale and John Dwyer (Thee Oh Sees), Tim Cohen and Shayde Sartin (The Fresh and Onlys) were among the contributors to the new album.

Sonny and the Sunsets – “Stranded” (Live at The Knockout, Mission Creek Music Festival 2009)

But enough about the names and the pedigree. This is great rock-pop music: not bedroom music per se, but possessing an uncommon sense of personality that validates the label’s comparisons to Jonathan Richman. Soft Abuse says there are only going to be 500 copies of Tomorrow is Alright, and if there’s any justice, they will be gone quickly.
