It’s always a pleasure to announce something free and even better when the something free is also something awesome. So you can understand that we’re excited to be the exclusive promotional conduit for the following announcement:
Deer Tick will be performing a free show at The Independent on Wednesday, March 3rd! The show is first come, first admitted, and 21+. Doors open at 8. Show starts at 9.
I would recommend showing up on the early side based on the following truths:
- The Independent holds approximately 500 concertgoers.
- Rhode Island’s Deer Tick are rightfully a popular band, with an eagerly-awaited third full length scheduled to arrive later this year.

Though it seems that Noise Pop 2010 makes us wait for big headliners until the weekend, the first night of venue shows truly embraces the theme of this year’s festival: local support on every level, with booking selections from SF’s biggest headliners, to up-and-coming bands marketing their new material.
One of San Francisco’s finest indie rock staples Rogue Wave headlines Wednesday, and combining the hometown fandom with the limited capacity of Bottom of the Hill, it is no surprise that the show quickly sold out. But lucky ticketholders should be provided gratifying results. Getting closer and closer to their March 2 release, Rogue Wave intends to shock listeners with the sudden moves on Permalight, setting their pace faster with a more tremendous energy than ever (as told in the recording teaser posted last month). The packed bill also includes the similarly electrifying Man/Miracle, Sacramento’s Two Sheds and Princeton — from LA and highly likely to contain a pair of twins — who doesn’t adore a good looking pair of twins? And furthermore, who doesn’t love Daytrotter sessions?

The Foreign Born (LA)/Free Energy (PA) tour stops in San Francisco to co-headline with Fresh & Onlys and The Splinters at the Rickshaw Stop, a rally of danceable, cardio-friendly pop. Locally speaking, this is a lucky opportunity to catch The Splinters as they warm up for their big record release in March at Amnesia. Their Terrorbird debut Kick is a delightful, happy-heartbreak balance chocked full of the delightful side of female moods.

The Fresh & Only’s – “Second One to Know”
An equally irresistible bill and nail-biting decision for garage rock lovers, is that of the newly Matador’d Harlem (Austin) with Best Coast (LA), The Sandwitches and Young Prisms at Cafe du Nord. One of two shows at this year’s Noise Pop sponsored by indie music blog Gorilla vs. Bear, a clever pairing of local and out-of-town bands offering a glimpse at what’s of high interest to the blog scene. All bands have fresh material, and with Best Coast’s last SF show just a few weeks ago having sold out, this one very well could too.

About the bands:
Grass Widow (“To Where”) recently signed to Kill Rock Stars, with an album forthcoming in August. See them with P.E.E., True Widow, and Ovens on February 27th at Cafe Du Nord.
East Bay band The Splinters (“Mysterious”) have their debut full length, Kick, coming out in March. The band opens the February 24th Rickshaw Stop show with Foreign Born, The Fresh & Onlys and Free Energy.
Mist and Mast (“Burning Homes”) not long ago released their second album, Action at a Distance. They’ll be kicking off the February 24th Noise Pop Happy Hour at Bender’s that also features Love is Chemicals and The Ian Fays.
San Diego’s Tape Deck Mountain (“Bat Lies”) perform at Noise Pop before touring down to South by Southwest. The band opens the February 25th show at Cafe Du Nord, also featuring Citay, Scout Niblett and Greg Ashley.
Local trio The Sandwitches (“Back to the Sea”) are about to head out on a cross-country tour. They’ll be at Cafe Du Nord on February 24th at a Gorilla vs. Bear co-presented show with Harlem, Best Coast and Young Prisms.
The Voidist is the third solo album from LA-based songwriter Imaad Wasif (“Priestess”). See Wasif with The Soundtrack of Our Lives, Nico Vega, and Music For Animals at The Independent on February 27th.

P.O.S., Grieves, Budo and Dessa @ Bottom of the Hill 2/18

Enthusiastic hip-hop fans lined up, down, and around the block waiting patiently to pack in to the sold out, all-ages P.O.S. show at Bottom of the Hill. Desperate fans took to panhandling for extra tickets, and countless sneak-in attempts occurred.
The intensely powerful jazz-infused slam poetry of Dessa (the sole female representation in the Doomtree collective) permeated through the walls as eager fans listened in. Dessa wrapped up by serenading the crowd like the true soul musician she is.
Not to be outdone, Grieves and Budo, the latest additions to Rhymesayers, brought the big guns to San Francisco. Infamous beat maker Budo came equipped with brass, bass, guitars, and turntables, spinning, hitting, plucking and mixing on the spot. Meanwhile, Grieves made his way through some of his popular, and also more personal rhymes, even taking a request for “I Ate Your Soul,†a song apparently he “hates doing.†But you did it so well, Grieves. Judging by the audience reaction (and groupie following), it appears that Grieves and Budo have struck gold with their collaboration. The duo’s debut album together, 88 Keys And Counting, will be re-packaged and re-distributed through Rhymesayers Entertainment on March 2nd of this year, with an exclusive Rhymesayers debut album soon to follow.

A modest but dedicated crowd turned up at the Rickshaw Stop Wednesday night to hear a solid set by some very fresh East Bay talent. First up were TV Mike and the Scarecrowes, coming off of several days on the road supporting their CD Spitting in Cursive. Originally out of Bloomington, Indiana but based in Oakland of late, The Scarecrowes traffic in straight-ahead country-tinged pop. They work up a nice head of steam with Toby Oler’s propulsive banjo and guitarist Matt Lundquist’s pedal steel leads adding flavor. The last half the set, particularly a cover of Lowell George’s classic “Willin’,†found them in a respectable groove, and co-lead singer De Delarosa’s voice emerged from the somewhat busy mix. TV Mike and company come off as affable oddballs. The affable part has found its way into the music. Now maybe a little more oddball…

Ash Reiter, a young singer celebrating the release of her new CD, Paper Diamonds, anchored down the middle spot in the lineup and handily took top honors for the night. She had assembled an expanded backup group for the occasion, featuring guitarist Nich Pak, percussionist Alex Curran from the band Wave Array and guitarist/keyboardist Matt Adams from The Blank Tapes. The group was still mastering the material, but they brought a nonchalant enthusiasm –- not to mention solid musical skill — to the task. Drummer Will Halsey, Reiter’s main musical collaborator, held everything together with an adept sense of dynamics and some effective harmony vocals.

Ms. Reiter is a delightful young talent with already well-developed songwriting skills. Her voice could be compared to any number of familiar names, Zooey Deschanel or Jolie Holland being the most readily available, but it is a sign of her gifts that she really doesn’t benefit from comparison to anyone. Behind her vintage, lipstick-red National, she drives familiar yet distinct pop songs in a voice that, if anything, is stronger live than on her recordings. In her smoky blend of retro pop and modernism, sincerity and ironic detachment, her music brought to mind Sondre Lerche at several points. The tuneful nature of her compositions and the balance of wit and honesty in her voice are thoroughly winning.

While the opening night of Noise Pop 2010 appears unassuming on the surface, the two events of Tuesday evening are rather substantial, and definitely not to be missed.
Kicking off a week’s worth of free events, the Noise Pop opening night party will take place at Benders Bar, as presented by Diesel and Live105. The party will feature the outrageous Har Mar Superstar and requires no money for entry or alcohol, but does require that you pick up a special Diesel T-shirt beforehand and wear it to the party. Complete details here. The party will go from 5:00 – 8:00 pm, and you have to be 21+ years old to get in. Combining free alcohol with Bender’s hip space and the crazy theatrics of Har Mar? This evening is going to be quite the ruckus, to say the least.

Afterwards, a very special event awaits Noise Pop attendees at Oakland’s Fox Theater, featuring some unique and historic guests. Yoko Ono and her Plastic Ono Band (with Cornelius, Yuka Honda, and Sean Lennon) will be performing in the Bay Area for the first time in over 14 years. That’s THE Yoko Ono, the legendary avant-garde musician with decades of performance behind her, playing with a group of like-minded talent that includes her own son. The local art-rockers of Deerhoof will open the show, which begins at 8:00 pm (doors at 7:00) and costs $39.50. All ages are invited.
