2010 Scatterbrain Jamboree, Fri-Sat @ Thee Parkside

February 17, 2010

In lieu of bigger festivals looming just around the corner, let us not forgot about the 2010 Scatterbrain Jamboree. Presented and put together by Wiretap Music and KZSU Stanford, this event will feature 16 bands (14 of which are local) over the course of two days (February 19-20) at Thee Parkside. And while it’s a great opportunity to support and highlight local music, the Scatterbrain Jamboree is also a strictly not-for-profit venture: all proceeds will benefit the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.

Tickets are $10 per day or $16 for both days, and all ages are invited. The lineup and schedule will be as follows [after the jump]:

railcars remixes from Xiu Xiu, Lucky Dragons + more

February 16, 2010

The dually residing LA/SF electronic musician Aria Jalali, also known by the moniker railcars, has announced the release of an EP of remixes of his track, “Cathedral With No Eyes,” originally from the 12″ of the same name on Stumparumper last year. According to railcars, that release “recount[ed] the life of Edmund the Martyr, a 9th century king of East Anglia with songs about his life and succession to the throne as a young boy, his conquests, his suffering at the hands of vikings and death by their arrows.”

So far, the remix by Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu) has been posted for listening, but the EP will also include renditions by Lucky Dragons, Truman Peyote and more. The EP will be free on Aria’s website, and purchasable on cassette for the “cost of production and postage.”

railcars isn’t done with that news, however. Jalali also plans to release a tribute to Kate Bush’s 1985 album Hounds of Love, made possible by fundraising on Kickstarter. Currently, Jalali is wrapping up his last dates on a European tour, but has, at this time, no performances scheduled upon his arrival home.

Shredification: Live and Undead

February 15, 2010

Shredification
This coming Tuesday, the city of New Orleans will be subsumed under the boozy cloud of Mardi Gras. Those still recovering from the Saints’ feel-good Super Bowl win have just two more days to prepare themselves for a second helping of revelry and mayhem. Judging from the profusion of Saints-themed merchandise on their website, the members of Big Easy-based stoner metal supergroup Down are most likely part of this beleaguered, hangover-nursing group.

I became aware of the prevailing trends in Down swag while researching their forthcoming effort, a live CD/DVD (due 3/23) called Diary of a Mad Band (not to be confused with the Jodeci release of the same name). An incendiary live outfit, Down combines the sludgy heaviness endemic to their below-sea-level hometown with the limber, improvisatory tendencies gleaned from their southern rock influences. The 100 hours of live footage included are sure to be rife with amplified goodness, and at least 300 shots of drummer Jimmy Bower looking exactly like Animal on the Muppets.

Despite Down’s yeoman efforts, the live album is a curious commodity in today’s heavy music circles, more of a record label investiture than a labor of love. The well-known difficulties and risks involved in producing such recordings are well known, and bands tend to hew closely to a live-DVD format that features them recreating recorded material as closely as possible.

The profusion of these by-the-book cash-grabs is worrying, but counterbalanced by the small number of live releases in recent years that capture the urgency and creativity of a heavy band firing on all cylinders. Though by no means comprehensive, or in any particular order, the list below attempts to give credit to three bands whose live discs have done themselves and their fans justice.

Sacramento bands play for Haiti: Two Sheds, Sister Crayon

February 12, 2010

To help raise money toward Haiti relief via Doctors Without Borders, on Friday Feb. 19 there will be a benefit showcase at Luigi’s Fun Garden sponsored by Sacramento News & Review,, featuring the local independent music of Two Sheds, What’s Up, Sister Crayon, Chelsea Wolfe, and many more (6pm, $10 suggested donation).

Two Sheds – “You”

Of the bands partaking in the benefit, nothing more accurately ties them together than their shared residency in the Sacramento region. The diversity of sound is vast — from mathy prog to folk singer-songwriters — and an intriguing blend of hip-hop, funk and indie folk quality from Sister Crayon, who continuously grows through new membership and influence (we posted regarding their release last year). Here is a great piece on Sister Crayon recently published by The Sac Bee.
