Although it was our third year putting together The Bay Area Takeover, it was by far our most challenging and most rewarding event in this series to date. On behalf of The Bay Bridged I would personally like to thank all of the bands and everyone who helped make this event a huge success. The Dodos to tour with The New Pornographers

It brings a proud tear to our Bay Area blogging eyes to watch The Dodos go from Dodo Bird, to a song on our first compilation (the early hit “Men”), and now on to tour with a respected and longstanding indie rock name like The New Pornographers. This is exciting news. On this tour, The Dodos make a stop for Bonnaroo, come home to play The Fox, and receive support from The Dutchess and the Duke and Imaad Wasif.

Mi Ami LP out next week, support High Places Wednesday @ Rickshaw Stop

Mi Ami and High Places (LA) are both headed to the Rickshaw Stop this Wednesday to support their newest Thrill Jockey releases with LA’s Smell allstars, Protect Me (8pm, $12). While High Places’ High Places vs. Mankind is out today, Mi Ami’s Steal Your Face LP has been announced to drop April 6.
The Steal Your Face LP will include “Latin Lover” (featured below), plus five other songs embodying Mi Ami’s loud, erratic style of avant-garde. Mi Ami has done a fine job of creating a sound that you can’t quite put your finger on, but applies an anthropological wonderment to dance-punk and noise. This EP will be Mi Ami’s second Thrill Jockey release, and will include a supporting tour through the Midwest, a record release show at home April 29 (details TBA), and a trip to Europe this spring (dates on MySpace).
As I plan to pick up High Places vs. Mankind Wednesday at the show, it’s fair to make some predictions — as “On Giving Up” insinuates, High Places’ newest batch of material maintains their experimental side of arrangement, but orbits dub-dance rhythmics more than before.

This week, our podcast features San Francisco singer-songwriter Sonya Cotton. Sonya’s part of a local indie folk-rock scene brimming with talent, and her sophomore album Red River, released last year, is a haunting and moving work. Recorded with Scott McDowell, and featuring the contributions of over a dozen guest musicians, Red River‘s diverse instrumentation adds to its detail-rich character. Cotton’s songs musically and lyrically unfold over multiple listens; there’s a thoughtfulness at work here that she also demonstrated in our very enjoyable interview.
We sat down with Sonya earlier this year to discuss her origins and the process of writing and recording Red River. We’ve also included four songs from the album in the show (“Red River”, “Knowing Mother”, “Canal” and “Hilltop Hymn”).

Sean Hayes – “When We Fall In” (mp3)
SF’s Sean Hayes recently self-released his sixth album, Run Wolves Run, and he’s performing this Wednesday at The New Parish in Oakland (8pm, $15, 18+). “When We Fall In” is the first track on the new album, and it’s perhaps the perfect introduction to Hayes’ heartfelt singing and genre-blurring approach to folk-rock.

The Bay Bridged Presents: Noise Pop 2010 Happy Hour

This year’s Noise Pop 2010 Festival was a blast, and on top of the two shows The Bay Bridged presented at the Swedish American this year, we also hosted a Noise Pop Happy Hour at Bender’s with Hunx & His Punx, Spencey Dude & the Doodles, and Weekend. Thanks to the event’s sponsors, Fernet Branca and Noise Pop, we were able to have some fun with both the bands and attendees, shown in the video above. Again, we’d like to thank everyone that made our Happy Hour such a packed and exciting event.
