To all the mopers home in San Francisco wishing they were here in Austin, what really makes us envious is missing the opportunity to see Xiu Xiu Saturday, with co-headlining Tune-Yards and Noveller (Brooklyn) at Bottom of the Hill (10pm, $12).
Nothing but praise continues to circulate since the release of Xiu Xiu’s newest on Kill Rockstars, Dear God, I Hate Myself, and some disturbance has come along with the album (just as many might expect from Jamie Stewart). It almost feels irresponsible to re-post the video above of the album’s title track and first single — it might keep you up at night. Among the standard mix of indie rock concerts taking place this weekend (save for the many local players at this year’s SxSW), a soul-infused evening featuring Oakland musicians is scheduled to take place on Friday at the Independent (9:00 pm, $12/advance, $14/door).
Joe Bagale, a young local with an old soul, will showcase his retro R&B-influenced pop and smooth, jazzy compositions. The multi-instrumentalist has most often performed in traditional jazz atmospheres, but will change things up on Friday by headlining a more indie-influenced lineup. You can download three songs from Bagale’s self-titled debut by visiting his Bandcamp site.
Also on the bill will be OONA, a powerful voice and upbeat electro-rock and energetic live show all rolled into one. Oona Garthwaite and her OONA gang have cultivated some recent national notoriety after “Tore My Heart” was featured on So You Think You Can Dance last December. The Thrill of It All, another R&B-influenced indie outfit (formerly known as Tokyo Decadence), will open the evening’s festivities.

When Ayla Nereo isn’t playing music with her brother Davyd as Beatbeat Whisper, she’s finding other channels of creativity, such as making films and performing solo (both hobbies are combined above). Tonight, Nereo opens at Cafe Du Nord for Spooky Flowers and Camaron Ochs, the perfect combination of jovial folk fit for St. Patrick’s Day (9:30pm, $12).

A friend of mine from SoCal told me to check out Holly Miranda (because she is awesome, I was told) at the Fox. Scheduling conflicts prevented that from happening but, to my luck, Holly was playing Cafe du Nord only a few days later. Better yet, the Du Nord show included some local supporters opening up the bill.
I made it in time to catch the last few songs of Tortured Genies. I’m really digging the 60′s pop revival that’s going on and the Genies bring their own flair to the sound. Floating along like a cool California breeze, the room was filled with good vibes, swaying – not thrashing, mind you – bodies, and a sense that we were all hovering a couple inches above the ground. ‘Twas the perfect segue into the non-condescendingly aloof shoegazing of Foxtail Somersault.
Foxtail Somersault thrust me into an early 90′s flashback, bringing up thoughts of the Happy Mondays et al. With a sound like theirs, it’s often easy to overlook the musicianship involved, especially when listening to a recording. Seeing them live, I couldn’t help but latch onto the sonic landscapes painted by guitarists Seiken Nakama and James Spadaro. Never overpowering the rest of the sound, they found the pocket early and filled it just right. Elizabeth Anderson’s vocals were like an aural conundrum. They were light and wispy yet rich and full, all at the same time. The texture they brought to the room evades any possible written description on my part, so you’ll just have to see them live for yourself.

HIJK album release + birthday bash @ Cafe du Nord Thursday

An Oakland band known as HIJK have been playing in and around the Bay Area since their early days as Hijack the Disco. Back in 2007, HIJK released The Pen and the Letter, an album full of hyper late 90′s-style rock, full of addictive hooks and complex riffs.
The band is now set to release RINR♥ (Our Eye and Our Heart), which will be celebrated via an official release show this Thursday, March 18 at Cafe du Nord (8 pm, $10, 21+). Fellow locals Love is Chemicals and Rademacher will open the evening’s festivities, which are also meant to celebrate the birthday of HIJK’s bass player (Karl Tupper).
