Singles + tourdates: Birds & Batteries, Judgement Day, Sugar & Gold
March 15, 2010

The week’s chosen bands all share a few similarities: they’ve recently released new singles, are about to embark on national tours, and two of the three are stopping in Austin this week for SxSW.
Before releasing Panorama, Birds & Batteries shelled out the free download “Out in the Woods,” an “extended prog-house jam” sampling both the upcoming record and their last record, Up To No Good. While in Austin, B&B will be playing our Bay Area Takeover at the Beauty Bar, as well as other shows (listed after the jump).
On a similar game plan is the local stringed metal band, Judgement Day, also making the teaser-before-the-record move. Their self-released Peacocks/Pink Monsters will be out April 13, but until then, enjoy the very last track from the album, “Genosha”. They claim to perform this song uniquely every time, which will be reinvented this Saturday at SxSW at the Dominican Joe Coffee Shop, and have additional tourdates after the jump.
Our last audio sampling of the week is a pop-disco number from Sugar & Gold, the first track off their April 27th release Get Wet! (Antenna Farm). S&G tourdates can also be found by clicking the link below.

Shredification: Spring Metal Preview
March 15, 2010

Spring is wending its way towards San Francisco, and the improved weather will be accompanied by an array of exciting metal albums and the tours that follow in their wake. Bands both local and national will have new wares on display — here are a few of the choicest to anticipate.
Jucifer – Throned in Blood (April 6th, 2010, Nomadic Fortress Records)

No matter how many times I enumerate Jucifer’s essential details, they’re still completely captivating. To wit, Amber Valentine and Edgar Livengood are the world’s heaviest husband-and-wife team. As if that weren’t quirky-cool enough, they’re also officially nomadic, having no base of operations other than their rock and roll RV and a trailer full of amps — guitarist/singer Valentine plays the loudest, largest guitar rig I’ve ever experienced personally. When I saw them at Annie’s Social (RIP!) she had 11 cabs set up.
The music is an arresting blend of sludge, shoe-gaze, noise, stoner-metal, and thrash, and its played with an atavistic conviction that most bands can only dream about (In a recent interview, Valentine mentioned that her husband’s hands are frequently damaged, due to his habit of playing cymbals with his fists). Their previous release L’Autrichienne (Relapse, 2008) was a masterful concept album about the French Revolution, capturing the band at its versatile best. Judging from the cover art, the new LP has a similar historical bent; presumably they’ll play some of it live when they rumble Thee Parkside on March 18th.

Tartufi – The Goodwill of the Scar EP
March 12, 2010
There are times when an allegedly “full length” album is so brief that it feels more like a glorified EP, and then there are times when an EP is so lengthy or ambitious that tagging on the “EP” bit feels like an unintended slight. Tartufi‘s new The Goodwill of the Scar EP may be one of those latter cases, as the 12″ (out this month on Southern Records) features a single, twenty-six minute long track entitled “The Butterless Man,” which was recorded with Tim Green at Louder Studios late last year. Our own Fenny Kuo shot a three-part series on the making of the new record. Part one is above, with the other two after the fold.
Tartufi celebrates the new release with a show at Bottom of the Hill on Monday (9:30pm, $12, 21+), where they’ll be supporting the terrific Danish band Efterklang. VIR opens the show.
Also, remember how we were helping Tartufi give away Nests of Waves and Wire one song at a time? We’re still doing that, so here’s “Dot Dash”:

As a reminder, you can purchase the complete Nests of Waves and Wire from Southern, as well as Amazon and iTunes.

In addition to playing at this year’s SxSW (you know, at parties like the Bay Area Takeover – *ahem*), Oakland’s Man/Miracle are scheduled to open for fellow Oaklanders Rogue Wave on the band’s April Permalight tour. This tour will conclude with a hometown stop at the Fillmore on April 30th.

Geographer releases Animal Shapes
March 11, 2010

Geographer – “Kites”
Oh, Geographer. Truly one of our favorite local bands, and a group who seem to win new fans with every live performance. The band’s new EP, Animal Shapes, is out now, and it really seems to pick up on the New Order vibe in their, well, New Order cover on their last 7″. The acoustic piece of the trio’s electroacoustic balance is there, but it really feels like the group has honed its use of synths as a foil to Mike Deni’s great voice.
The new EP is available from Tricycle Records or on iTunes. Geographer is playing tonight with LoveLikeFire and Altars at the Rickshaw Stop (8pm, $12).

B and Not B release debut album, show on Thursday
March 10, 2010

Back in November, B and Not B did the guerrilla thing and rocked it out of a U-Haul. And now, circa March 2010, the band has officially released their self-titled debut album, introducing the Bay Area to their layered, cheerful pop. Stream the whole album below:
B and Not B is currently available on a “name-your-own-price” basis via Bandcamp (although, to keep themselves afloat, the band is suggesting $10 for a copy). The album’s official release party will take place on Thursday at Cafe du Nord, with Mist and Mast and The Thingers also on the bill (9:00 pm, $10, 21+).
To prepare for Thursday, check out the following video of B and Not B’s “Unlucky Break,” which was filmed on the band’s recent tour of the Pacific Northwest:
