KQED podcast suggests Billy & Dolly as a band to rip off

Ever find yourself trying to sell your friends and fellow music critics on a new record you’re really jazzed about? On Tuesday, KQED Arts released an audio feature focused on local pop-rock duo Billy & Dolly, in which reporter Eric Winick thought to gather some testimonials about their debut album, In the Beginning. The result: an interesting discussion of the album, with the offering of some past and present comparisons to the band’s sound. B&D have no upcoming shows scheduled, but continue to check in on their website.

Saturday: Strange Dog 2 with Rank/Xerox, Terry Malts, Dick Dog, Lilac

April 30, 2010

The second installment of the show series Strange Dogs continues to dig a little deeper into the Bay Area rock scene with Rank/Xerox, Dick Dog (San Ramon) and Lilac, who we believe is an offshoot of the loud psych-rock collective Honey. If you’re on the prowl for a fresh local find, try Terry Malts: this post-punk trio is refreshingly loud, refreshingly Ramones-venerating, and undeniably your warehouse dance party initiators. Strange Dog 2 will be set way out in Bayview at the “Widowmaker Warehouse” (8pm, $5).

Magic Bullets “Lying Around” on new 7″

April 29, 2010

The last full-length release from Magic Bullets (feature podcast) may have been in 2007, and it may have featured a long tumultuous name (a CHILD but in life yet a DOCTOR in love). This does not mean that the band is incapable of releasing a more straightforward second album, and more than likely, it will be full of more sweeping indie pop gems.

Magic Bullet’s next full-length will be a self-titled effort, out in June via Mon Amie Records. To help promote the album, the band has released the first single as a 7″, entitled “Lying Around,” with an exclusive vinyl B-Side (“Thoughts of You”).

Catch the band live at Bottom of the Hill on May 30th with Mister Loveless and Transfer (9:00 pm, $10, all ages).

Review: Tiny Television, Chambers at Cafe du Nord 4/24

April 28, 2010

Chambers opened the night at Cafe du Nord this past Sunday, launching the crowd into deep space with synthesizer and guitar layers that encompassed reverberated, cavernous vocals. Appropriately, singer Gareth Lloyd moonwalked his way through parts of the show. His vocals careened over the shifting rhythms of drumming played by three members of the band throughout the set, adding a great spacious feeling to their sound.

It was refreshing to see the confidence of Chambers’ female guitarists and bass player as they deftly worked through the rapid transitions of the songs. Sarah Melfy’s performance on guitar, drums and keyboard was particularly bright in its timely melodies and counter rhythms. The band executed the complicated and quick transitions of their songs efficiently, but it came at the cost of a more dynamic stage presence — with the exception of Lloyd, the band was economic in their physical movements.

The set had a funny moment when Lloyd tried to tell the audience about their album available for free while his voice modifier was still on; it sounded like a psa on a spelunking mission. Switching it off then on again, he teasingly garbled at the crowd for a moment, garnering some laughter before the next song.

Listening feels like: Major Tom took you out on a date to the arcade and you finally beat him at Star Ship (in a dim arcade room, minimalist electronics, sharing beers and the ebullience of winning).

Tiny Television maintained the high energy Chambers generated, but with a foot-stomping beat. Complete with mic lights and a smoke machine, their stage presence had the good-time feel of a house party; in the middle of the last song singer Jeremy D’Antonio let the smoke machine rip, exclaiming, “I almost forgot to use it!”

About this week’s bands:

The Heavenly States (“A Man For Our Times”) recently contributed a song to the Karl Rove: Courage and Consequence compilation. They also have a new EP coming out this summer.

The Blank Tapes (“Driving Out Of My Mind”) have a new album, Home Away From Home, which you can currently download for free from White Noise. See them with Wave Array at the Shattuck Down Low in Berkeley on May 15th.

Lloyd’s Garage (“No Victim”) is a local duo whose debut CD From the Comfort of Your Home is out now. Check out their recent video for “Oh Lovely” here.

Raw Pie, the singles tape from “Hoboken” punks Personal and the Pizzas (“Brass Knuckles”), remains one of my favorite things to come out this year. The band doesn’t have any dates scheduled until a late summer tour with Slippery Slopes.

Battlehooch (“Somersaults”) just released a new self-titled LP of experimental prog-pop. Catch this energetic live band at Homestead Lanes Bowling Alley in Cupertino on May 8th, and at the Great American Music Hall on June 12th.
