A B & the Sea play BOTH Tuesday, release more songs

April 23, 2010

When we last checked in with A B & the Sea, the band was knee-deep in the viral marketing campaign to slowly release songs to the public, “unlocking” one at a time. Now, as more fans have downloaded and shared songs from the Boys & Girls EP, “Down and Around” has since been unleashed in both MP3 and video format (above).

Those interested in checking out more songs from the EP (produced by Eric Frederic/.Wallpaper and Chris Chu/The Morning Benders and recorded at Different Fur Studios) can do so on the band’s website.

A B & the Sea are scheduled to play Bottom of the Hill this Tuesday, April 27th (9:00 pm, $12, 18+), opening for Everybody Was in the French Resistance . . . Now along with Carletta Sue Kay.

Fever‘s “Sandstorm Woman” was originally the B-side on the Sleepy Son 10″, and you can hear a rocking live take on that song in the band’s New, Improved, LIVE session last year:

Ash Reiter – “Paper Diamonds”

April 21, 2010

Ash Reiter is quickly becoming a tip-of-the-tongue name to local music lovers, as she invites listeners across the Bay to dance along to her newest glimmering folk-pop collection, Paper Diamonds. The album’s release has garnered some critical attention, as has her live show.

Reiter has a weekend of nearby performances — one to benefit the Chilean earthquake victims in Berkeley, and another with local songwriters, one being the Simon Joyner-meets-Adam Green soloist, Adam Balbo. Reiter’s MySpace also lists a few local dates in early May and a slot during the San Francisco Free Folk Festival in June.

Friday 4/23: Starry Plough (Berkeley) with Wave Array, Allofasudden (9pm, $10)
Saturday 4/24: Epicenter Cafe with Anna Ash, Adam Balbo (8pm, $?)

Mission Freak! benefit for Mission Creek 2010

April 21, 2010

The 2010 Mission Creek Music and Arts Festival takes place this July 14th-18th, and the MCMAF crew is raising funds with a dance party benefit this Friday night, April 23rd, at the Rickshaw Stop (10pm-2am, $5-10 sliding scale).

Mission Freak! features DJ sets from The Selecter DJ Kirk (Concrete Jungle, SweaterFunk), Kelley Stoltz, EmDee (Debaser/Club Neon), Neil Martinson (SMiLE!) and Roll (Life/Style). All of them for $5-10 bucks to support a great local music fest later this year? Sounds good to me.

Also, bands take note: MCMAF is currently accepting submissions for the festival via Sonicbids.

Sean Hayes (Podcast #210)

April 20, 2010

This week, we are pleased to feature on our podcast local folk-rock hero Sean Hayes. In March, Hayes released Run Wolves Run, his sixth solo album. While some artists might be in coasting mode by album number six, Sean is still finding new ways to develop his sound. Run Wolves Run features more prominent electric guitar work than prior releases, the result of Hayes finally finding an amp that he liked enough to add to his sound. That might be a simple reason to get more electric, but it’s consistent with Hayes’ aesthetic of making the most of what he has at the time. And what he has, at this point, is a talented circle of friends and an ear for funky, consistently winning tunes.

Subscribe to the The Bay Bridged weekly podcast to get each new episode downloaded free to your iTunes the moment it’s published!

We sat down Sean Hayes a few weeks ago to discuss his new album and his many years in the San Francisco scene. We’ve also included four songs from Run Wolves Run in the show.
