The guiding forces behind the San Francisco/New York City music blog Hippies Are Dead have announced their official label subsidiary: Hippies Are Dead Records. And the label’s first release? Grand Lake‘s debut full-length, entitled Blood Sea Dream, which comes out next month.

Blood Sea Dream was put together by the band with a little help from Jason Kick from Maus Haus. The album is the latest release from Grand Lake since their EP debut on 500 Records, in addition to the “Louise” EP and special “Sandusky Sunset” cassingle.

Check out “Louise,” below, and stream the entire album on Grand Lake’s website.

Social Studies – “Time Bandit”

We’d heard rumblings that SF indie pop band Social Studies was finally nearing the release of their first full length, Wind Up Wooden Heart, and it tickles us pink to hear that the album’s coming out on Antenna Farm Records on July 27th. The band’s May tour of the West Coast concludes with a Rickshaw Stop show on May 27th that’s part of SF Popfest.

Spoon finish tour with sold-out show at the Fox

April 16, 2010

Photos by: Charlie Homo

It’s a particularly long musical interlude, and Britt Daniel has taken off his short leather jacket, revealing his standard concert ensemble of tight pants and fitted button-down shirt. He looks out over the absolutely packed Fox Theater – a crowd filled with the underage idolizers, the mega-nerd old-school fans (ahem), and the bros with bad dance moves periodically yelling out “PLAY ‘THE UNDERDOG’!”

He squats for a few moments near the foot of the stage, and looks pointedly at people in the front whose faces he can actually see before the drown of the lights. He does this a few times throughout the night, taking brief respites for the purpose of making eye contact, exchanging a smile. He’s trying to find some sort of connection with his fans, if only fleeting, in the wash of over-stimulation.

I don’t think Spoon is drawn to fame.

Where we begin and where we end with Spoon is a tale of success and inspiration – if, in fact, the beginning is “The Agony of Laffitte” and the end is a large majestic theater packed with such a spectacle. The band’s decade of hard work has clearly paid off: Spoon is relatively famous, and for once, actually making money. However, Tuesday’s show at the Fox begged a respective desire to return to anonymity.

The Rum Diary – Retrospective 2000-2007

The Rum Diary – “Pyrrhic Victory” (from Retrospective 2000 – 2007)

Parks and Records recently announced the upcoming release of Retrospective 2000 – 2007, which collects a variety of favorite and unreleased tracks from the much-loved, now-disbanded The Rum Diary.

Says the label:

Nobody ever expected a lightning strike of muse-tapped creative genius of such epic proportions as this to touch down in a NoCal cowtown with more taverns than stoplights. Yet the four university students, whose innocuous latenight postpub jam session would result in a band like no other anytime anyplace before, tapped said aforementioned muse and absorbed said bolt with nary a singed hair, and so the Cotati Sound Machine was born. Take a hearty stock of of rhythm (as in TWO rhythm sections), add a liberal dose of dreampop-postrock guitar (a la Mogwai or Three Mile Pilot), drizzle in a tincture of emocore (of the ethereal harmony variety) and voila! you’ve got the formula for what ails ya.

The CD’s available May 1, and pre-orders get to choose a free CD from either The Rum Diary or Shuteye Unison, which features TRD’s Daniel Mckenzie and Jon Fee.
