Announcing: The 2010 Rock Make Street Festival!
May 19, 2010

For the past two years, the Rock Make Street Festival has celebrated the Bay Area’s arts and music communities, bringing them together for a hell of an all day party on the streets of San Francisco’s Mission District. Proudly presented by The Bay Bridged, Tartufi, and Whizbang Fabrics, the Rock Make Street Festival returns to 18th Street and Treat Avenue on Sunday, August 22nd, 2010. This year’s festival will be twice the size of last year’s event, expanding to three stages of all local and kids’ rock bands and over 100 arts and crafts vendors.
While both are flourishing in the Bay Area underground, the crafts and music worlds rarely meet, making this a unique opportunity to sample the best in new and emerging Bay Area handicrafts, visual arts, fashion and live indie rock all at one awesome event celebrating the power of creativity and DIY spirit.
We are currently accepting submissions for vendors and interested bands for this year’s festival! Vendor submissions are due by July 19th, with an early bird special through June 6th. Band applications are due by May 31st. UPDATE: Due to the overwhelming amount of band submissions we will be moving our music submission date to May 26th, 2010
More details can be found on the 2010 Rock Make Street Festival Website.
Below is a video from last year’s event, and you can also view photos from Rock Make 2009 and Rock Make 2008.

Emily Jane White (Podcast #214)
May 19, 2010
Stream the episode:
This week’s podcast spotlights local singer-songwriter Emily Jane White, on the heels of the US release of her second album, Victorian America, by Milan Records. 2007′s Dark Undercoat introduced White’s powerful lyrics and commanding voice, and its bewitching folk-rock sound generated widespread critical acclaim. Things are a little less sparse this time around, as Emily and her band have crafted some wonderful string arrangements that increase the songs’ intrinsic emotional weight. The new works feel more ambitious, too, an exciting sign of continued growth by one of our favorite local artists.
We sat down with Emily a few weeks ago to discuss her new album. We’ve also included four songs from Victorian America in the episode.
Upcoming Shows:
Sunday, May 23rd
Cafe Du Nord
with Slow Motion Cowboys and Devotionals (Victorian America album release party, presented by The Bay Bridged and KALX)

Upcoming 2010 Indie Mart events and 3rd year anniversary bash 6/6
May 18, 2010

It’s almost time for the 2010 Indie Mart season to begin. The annual series of local DIY market events (including both shopping and bands) will kick off on Sunday, June 6th, 2010 (12:00-6:00 pm at Thee Parkside) with a celebration of Indie Mart’s three-year run:
Indie Mart used to be an underground shopping party in the shared backyard of founder Kelly Malone’s Mission apartment. But it grew up. Now in its third year, Indie Mart has quadrupled in size to become one of the most beloved shopping events for SF’s DIY set. Offering an eclectic mix of local designers, vintage, unique finds, live art & silk screening, hot plates, cold beers, and stiff drinks, Indie Mart is all about DIY, loud rawk decibels, local folks and a good time.
Additional details on the June 6th event have not yet been revealed, but in the meantime, the organizers are currently seeking Indie Mart vendors and Indie Mart sponsors.
The subsequent 2010 Indie Mart events will take place on July 18th, September 19th, and November 7th – all Sundays, all 12:00-6:00 pm, all at Thee Parkside.

Review: Fun., Audrye Sessions, Heartsounds at Slim’s 5/14
May 18, 2010

Seeing a show headlined by a band called Fun. leads you to go into it with a certain set of expectations — primarily that there’s going to be some dancing. While dancing certainly did occur, I can vouch for that, it only started at the end of the night, when the most fun band of the evening took the stage. Before that happened, the bill was filled with two wildly different Bay Area bands that led to an enjoyable, if not disjointed show.
I only caught the very end of opener Heartsounds’s set but the first thing I thought upon walking in the door was, “Hey, an emo band!” No, wait, come back. It was actually good. Don’t think emo in a Dashboard Confessional, dudes with eyeliner and nasally voices whining about their problems until some good Samaritan punches them in the face kind of way. Think more like Minor Threat-level instrumental intensity combined with third wave pop-punk vocals. The last song, which happened to be the only one I caught in its entirety, was a bouncy major key singalong with impassioned boy-girl harmonies and thunderous snare rolls. From what I could tell, Heartsounds aren’t especially concerned with breaking or even really bending the established tropes of their genre, rather inhabiting them with an all-convincing youthful intensity.Â
The transition from Heartsounds to the next band, Audrye Sessions, was jarring. The first thing you notice about the Oakland-grown Audrye Sessions is its size. An eight-piece with three string players, even without playing a note these guys give the impression that they can put out a whole lot of sound when they want to — and they did not disappoint.
Their first song started with dreamy ambiance that gradually developed into Explosions in the Sky-style post-rock, everything dripping with just enough reverb to make Slim’s sound like a big empty church. The soaring swells were soon anchored by a bass-led groove with a confident rhythmic lilt with singer Ryan Karazija, belting haunting, legato vocal lines in his best Thom Yorke impression.
