About this week’s bands:

Independent People (“Consolation”) is the solo project of one Brant K., who released Independent People in April. The project has also spawned a series of videos on Youtube.

Formerly of the band Photons, Ben Davila (“Eucalyptus”) wrote one song a week for an entire year. He’s now collecting those tracks and releasing them in four EPs over the course of 2010.

Singer-songwriter Kate Kilbane (“Sweet Unknown”) finished her first solo tour in SF and now calls it home. Her Medea Cycle EP collects songs written from the perspective of the Greek heroine.

Change is in the Weather is the latest EP from electro-soul band Blood and Sunshine (“Change is in the Weather”). They will be at Cafe Du Nord on July 20th, with Con Brio and The California Honeydrops.

Indie pop duo Camp Out (“Closer”) is currently touring the Northwest. Their debut album Closer is out now on Swordfish Records.

Review & Photos: Radar Brothers, Man/Miracle, Mist and Mast @ Rickshaw Stop 6/24/10

June 30, 2010

I ended up at Dan Sung Sa again, a rare late night eatery in Oakland, and a new personal fave. They are open evenings only from 6pm-2am. The walls are plastered with vintage Korean movie posters and most of the seats are in cute little curtained booths. If you find yourself in Oakland after midnight, check them out at 2775 Telegraph. The spicy pork is delicious. The menu is extensive and includes chicken gizzards, snail salad and yogurt soju!

Just prior, LA based Radar Brothers played the Rickshaw Stop (for the very first time). The crowd was small but the band didn’t seem to care. They added some new members since I saw them last. The young dudes on keyboard, guitar and bass brought a fresh energy to the brilliant songs of elder Radar Brother, Jim Putnam. “And the Birds” from the new record, The Illustrated Garden, was a real high point with four part harmonies (yes, four!). The show covered lots of new material including another bird song called “For the Birds.” Between the performance and all the birds, I was hooked. I purchased the new record, a t-shirt and a copy of the first (self-titled) record from 1996. They also had their debut EP available from 1993, but I had run out of cash. The band came out for 2 encores. I couldn’t remember the name of that song about chivalry so I kept my mouth shut, but somehow they picked up on it telepathically and pulled out my all time favorite RB tune, “Shifty Lines,” from the beautiful 1999 record, The Singing Hatchet. They closed with “You and the Father” from 2002′s And the Surrounding Mountains, another masterpiece.

Radar Brothers – “Horse”

Greg Ashley – Requiem Mass and Other Experiments

Greg Ashley – “Requiem Mass – Part I”

Oakland studio wizard Greg Ashley just released his latest album on Birdman Records, and it’s something of a curve ball after two solo records of psych-folk-pop. Side A of Requiem Mass and Other Experiments is, true to the album’s title, an electric requiem mass in four parts featuring contributions from a lengthy supporting cast of talented players. Side B is billed as “a series of sound and music experiments,” which Ashley has described in terms like “this fucked-up pulse,” “a wall of shit” and “a mess of instruments stumbling around,” descriptions that belie his restless sense of sonic adventure.

Thanks to Anna for pointing out this little known festival in San Jose!

The crowd was really small but San Jose’s The Mumlers wowed ‘em with a sweet Memphis soul sound.

What is Yo La Tengo doing here? Excellent versions of “Autumn Sweater” and part of “Little Eyes”.

Darondo killed it with a Screamin’ Jay Hawkins meets Al Green smash. Don’t miss him at Stern Grove on August 15th. Gimme some Legs!
