New Bay Area festival alert: LastSundaysFest

July 22, 2010

LastSundaysFest - 7/25/10

In its debut, LastSundaysFest takes on local independent music, craft vendors and the eclectic nature of Berkeley’s own Telegraph Avenue.

Berkeley’s Telegraph LastSundaysFest features two stages, one spotlighting up-and-coming and well known Bay Area bands and a second outdoor cafe stage presenting smaller groups and individual performers that you can watch while dining. Telegraph will be closed to traffic from Dwight to Durant in Berkeley from 12-7 p.m. for shopping, strolling, and festivities. Crafts vendors and other exhibitors will line the street with a special mechanical bull ride with contests for prizes. We will have our “Trek Telegraph” activity where fair attendees can win gift certificates worth thousands of dollars from telegraph merchants.

The first rendition of the LastSundaysFest takes place this Sunday, July 25th, featuring Judgement Day, the Phenomenauts, Club Crasherz, Space Monkey Crashers, and Grumbling Ginger.

Judgement Day – “Out of the Abyss”

Mi Ami becoming a duo; final SF shows as a trio 7/28 and 8/8

July 22, 2010

Mi Ami is undergoing some changes in the near future, as bassist Jacob Long is leaving the band after a few final shows. From the Thrill Jockey press release:

San Francisco band Mi Ami are coming to the end of an era and starting anew. Jacob Long has decided to part ways with Mi Ami in order to spend more time with family and pursue other hobbies. Daniel Martin-McCormick and Damon Palermo wish him well and will carry on under the moniker as a two piece for now. Over the next fews months they will be experimenting with different setups in new situations and contexts. Things are still pretty loose but we can likely expect to hear something new in the not so distant future and likely something that will sound very different than previous releases.

The band has two more local shows with Long, on Wednesday, July 28th at the Rickshaw Stop (with Peaking Lights and Pocahaunted) and Thursday, August 8th at The Knockout (with Bookworms).

Mission Creek Music Festival – Ganglians 7/17/10 from The Bay Bridged on Vimeo.

This year’s outdoor portion of the Mission Creek Music Festival was again held in the southern tip of the city at McLaren Park, including performances from Miranda Lee Richards, Brian Glaze and the Night Shift (Brian Jonestown Massacre), Grass Widow, Ganglians, The Fresh & Onlys, Thorny Brocky, The William Winant Percussion Group and Teri Gender Bender.

Though the weather didn’t stand strong for a warm day, the throng of sun-hungry, summer-dressed Mission Creek-goers stuck it through to F&Os’ late afternoon set.

Ganglians were caught in traffic and had to switch set times with Grass Widow. But unperturbed by the delay, Ganglians played a great set, which included the new song in the above video.

Girls Rock! screening at Actual Cafe Saturday, 7/24/10

July 21, 2010

Girls Rock!

The Bay Area Girls Rock Camp organization has carved out a spot in our local community for girls to glean strength from rock and roll.  The girls work together with their female instructors and volunteers to learn instruments and make music, and find their voices in the somewhat male-drenched din. The BAGRC and other regional camps stem from the Portland organization, Rock N’ Roll Camp for Girls (the first of its kind), where “Girls Rock” is not just a saying, but a state of mind.

‘Girls Rock!’ is a movie that documents the early days of girls rock camps, filming scenes and interviews from one of the week-long Portland camps. From the Girls Rock! website:

The film follows several campers: Laura, a Korean adoptee obsessed by death metal; Misty, who is emerging from a life of meth addiction, homelessness and gang activity; and Amelia, an eight-year-old who writes experimental rock songs about her dog Pipi. What happens to the girls as they are given a temporary reprieve from being sexualized, analyzed and pressured to conform is truly moving and revolutionary.

The organizers behind Bay Area Girls Rock Camp are scheduled to screen ‘Girls Rock!’ this Saturday, July 24th at Actual Cafe in Oakland. A screening like this is not to be missed, as it will also be an opportunity to learn more about the Bay Area Girls Rock Camp as a local, empowering organization. The event will start at 7:00 pm.

Social Studies (Podcast #223)

Social Studies (Podcast #223)

This week’s podcast showcases longtime friends of The Bay Bridged, San Francisco’s Social Studies. The release this month of their first full length album, Wind Up Wooden Heart, on Antenna Farm Records, feels like a welcome reintroduction to the band’s unique spin on nervy indie pop. Retro-sounding synths lend Social Studies’ songs plenty of catchy charm, but they’re equally brainy, with twists and turns that avoid standard pop structures. The music is lean enough to let singer Natalia Rogovin shine as a compelling frontwoman, and she’s joined by talented bandmates and guest contributions by members of Judgement Day, Thee More Shallows and Dreamdate. In short, there’s a lot to love here, and we’re excited to watch Social Studies embark on this exciting next chapter with Wind Up Wooden Heart‘s release.

Subscribe to the The Bay Bridged weekly podcast to get each new episode downloaded free to your iTunes the moment it’s published!

Royal Baths – “Nikki Don’t”

News came down recently that The Baths are now Royal Baths (so as to prevent getting confused with LA’s Baths), in the latest overlap-reducing name change to hit the Bay Area music scene. Also important, though, was the reveal of the album cover for Litanies, the band’s full length debut, out on Woodsist in September.

Royal Baths are at The Knockout on July 29th, with The Mantles and Fungi Girls.
