Introducing: the food and art of Regional Bias 2010

July 20, 2010

There’s a reason to show up early, and hungry — Regional Bias will kick off at 7pm with an art show and delicious food prepared by local chef Morgan Maki. Friday’s menu will be a smoked beef in jus sandwich, and the vegetarian option will be mushroom duxelle with horseradish aioli, crispy onions and arugula, both on a focaccia slab.

Morgan Maki has a long culinary history; in his own words, he started out delivering pizzas and washing a ton of dishes in Missouri before attending culinary school in Vermont. Next, Maki cooked in Boston, cut meat in Montana and moved to San Francisco, where he now instructs on the art of meat cutting, among other things, at 18 Reasons and doubles as the neighborhood butcher in the Bi-Rite Market. For more on the man behind the food, check out this piece SFoodie ran on Maki last year.

Along with delicious sandwiches, early-birds to Regional Bias can enjoy the creative output of The Bay Bridged’s photographers, contributors and website banner artists, all selling work within the affordable range of $15-300. The art show will include prints and original fine art pieces from our current banner artist Nidhi Chanani as well as Michael Thurston, Amy Woloszyn and many more. If you’ve ever seen a shot of a musician at a local club on our website that looks more like a fine art painting than a digital photo, it was probably the work of our famed photographer Charlie Homo, who will have select prints for sale on Friday:

Shredification: Saviours Two-song EP in the Bag?

July 19, 2010

Local lushes The Saviours have been gone all summer, conquering Europe like some sort of tatted-up, four-headed George Patton. The band are a remarkable feel-good story for these Ke$haful times, surmounting each successive challenge with enviable ease. Hard to believe it’s been 5 years since Warship (Level Plane Records) first slid out of the drydock.

After a full slate of massive outdoor festivals in the Old World and a late-summer junket on Ozzfest, the hesher quartet will return to the Bay, ten steps closer to being a headbanger household name. An Ozzfest off-date at Slim’s August 10th clashes tragicomically with one of the best metal tickets of all time: the epic Animosity-era Corrosion of Conformity/Goatsnake show at DNA Lounge the same night. 11th st. will be transformed into a whirlpool of leather, hair, beer, and weed.

Most groups would be content to bask in the rewards (chemical or otherwise) of such a jam-packed touring schedule, but Saviours had a different plan: they settled down in Den Haag with producer and psychedelic maven Guy Tavares, steward of the cult Motorwolf label. The band has long espoused a love for old-school recording techniques, and Tavares was able to give them the “16 track, 1″ tape, no punch-ins, edits or automation” experience they craved. Their official blog promises a two-track EP, featuring two versions of the same song — a normal version, and a 21-minute psychedelic alternate freakout fever dream version, which might well hearken back to the doomier sound of the earliest Saviours records. Expect it to accelerate your living.

Saviours – “Acid Hand”

Devotionals’ self-titled album is out now, release show on 8/6

July 16, 2010

Devotionals – “Chest Like Expansive Wings”

When Devotionals, led by Tyson Vogel (Two Gallants) and Anton Patzner (Judgment Day), performed at Emily Jane White’s record release show a few months back, I was struck by how the band’s compositions channeled the players’ prodigious talents into a moving, transcendent energy. “Chest Like Expansive Wings” is from their self-titled album, out earlier this week on Alive Records, and it showcases Vogel’s fingerpicking and Patzner’s violin intertwining vibrantly.

Devotionals’ album release show is Friday, August 6th at Bottom of the Hill (9pm, $10), with Kacey Johansing.

Review & Photos: Farmer Dave Scher, Seventeen Evergreen, Tim Cohen at the Rickshaw Stop 7/12/10

July 16, 2010

The night began at SF General Hospital where I found my camera thanks to the very helpful labor and delivery staff, but that’s a long story. I got to the Rickshaw just as Tim Cohen‘s latest band was taking the stage. He claims they are trying to come up with a name that doesn’t have someone’s name in it. Top runner at the moment is Magic Tricks. The small crowd seemed semi-supportive of the proposal. I’m not surprised Tim is having trouble coming up with another band name. He has already come up with some great ones including The Fresh & Onlys and Black Fiction.

Tim Cohen – “Haunted Hymns”

While this new line-up has some similarities to his other groups, mostly there are major differences. The band has two lovely ladies for the harmonizing, and they also provide some nice keyboard work, bass and the often overlooked tambourine. Me likey. The tunes are generally a little slower and most are quite haunted. “Spirits Inside” came replete with a Casper-like vocal harmony. “Haunted Hymns” suggests you ‘move much closer to me than it’s possible to be’ complete with ghostly echos. They even played a ‘snap along’ about vampires. All told it is kinda like the Beach Boys meets the 13th Floor Elevators downtown. Mr. Cohen has done it again, churning out more great music and injecting endless creative energy into the simmering Bay Area scene.

SF’s Seventeen Evergreen had the best video of the evening hands down. There were dancing astronaut women, flowers blooming and other psychedelic goodies. Add to this the drum machine and keyboard-driven pop, and I couldn’t help but think these guys must be big fans of the last three Flaming Lips records. I’m more of a Clouds Taste Metallic guy, but nevertheless, I approve. 17EG also displayed the most beautiful LP covers I have seen in some time. I would like to see a real drummer on a few songs, but it’s not all about me, is it?
