September 30, 2010

Shuteye Unison - Our Future Selves

Shuteye Unison has announced the arrival of a new album, Our Future Selves, which will be available starting November 16th, 2010. This new album, another dose of fresh indie pop, is the latest since the band’s 2008 self-titled release.

The album is coming out via Parks and Records, the local indie label with an extra-special purpose – a percentage of all album sales go directly to non-profits such as the National Park Conservation Association. Parks and Records is the brainchild of Jon Fee (along with Mimi Fee), who performs in Shuteye Unison on bass and vocals.

To celebrate the release of Our Future Selves, Shuteye Unison will be playing at the Rickshaw Stop on October 13th, along with fellow Parks and Records artists Crashlander (from Portland) and Silian Rail (8:00 pm, $10).

Bay Area electronic roundup: new releases from Elephant and Castle, Eskmo, and James & Evander

September 30, 2010

Man does not (or at least, need not) live by rock and roll alone. Below are selections from three rising local electronic artists with recent or upcoming releases. What’s more, all three have shows in the Bay during October.

<a href="http://elephantandcastle.bandcamp.com/album/analogue-ep" onclick="javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http://elephantandcastle.bandcamp.com']);">Analogue EP by Elephant and Castle</a>

The Analogue EP is the first release from Oakland’s Elephant and Castle, who celebrates the EP’s release at the Totally Intense Fractal Mind Gaze Hut on October 3rd with White Hinterland and Beep. Musician/engineer David Reep is the man behind the project’s glitchy, sample-driven electronic soul. In case he’s not busy enough, Reep’s also the founder of Third Culture Records, which has released music by Man/Miracle, Butterfly Bones, Foxtails Brigade, Judgement Day, The Soft White Sixties and James & Evander.

Eskmo is SF-by-way-of-CT’s Brendan Angelides, whose self-titled debut album comes out October 19th on Ninja Tune. “Cloudlight” is massive, wobbly music, a quasi-metallic slice of slowed-down pop aided by Angelides’ emotive but understated vocals. Eskmo performs as part of a free Ninja Tune XX anniversary show at 1015 Folsom on October 29th.

James & Evander – “Turtle Two”

Oakland production duo James & Evander recently released their latest collection of instrumental electronic pop, an EP called Sunlight & Circuitry. The EP’s billed as “weedwave, the stonier more introspective cousin of chillwave,” and the duo are playing on October 5th at Amoeba in Berkeley.

After the jump, a link to download “Come Back” from Eskmo, as well as all of his upcoming tour dates.

Ireland’s So Cow (“Ain’t No Fun”) released one of my favorite records this year in Meaningless Friendly. SF’s The Wrong Words and Neighbors support them at the Hemlock Tavern on October 4th.

With their first new album in 20 years, The Vaselines (“Sex With An X”) head to Great American Music Hall on October 20th. Dum Dum Girls open the show.

SF’s Lumerians (“Orgon Grinder”) recently signed to Knitting Factory Records, who will be releasing the band’s next album in 2011. They’ll be at the Rickshaw Stop on October 1st, with White Hills and White Cloud.

Reigning Sound (“Stick Up For Me”) headline a great Budget Rock show on Sunday, October 24th at Bottom of the Hill. They’ll be joined by The Flakes, Ty Segall, The Touch-Me-Nots and DJ Classic Bar Music.
