This weekend: Invisible Ocean festival out in the forest

September 23, 2010

Invisible Ocean 9/25-9/26

Invisible Ocean, a gathering out in Camptonville (outside of Nevada City), is taking place this weekend (September 25th – 26th). “Gathering” refers to the event’s focus on community within the context of music, arts, and food, all out amongst nature (you know, trees and stuff).

This year’s Invisible Ocean 2010 gathering has 26 bands, DJs, nighttime video projections & animations, farm-grown food, camping, art installations and creative projects galore. Last year’s inaugural event in Mendocino was an amazing convergence of art, food, music and neighborhood, and all involved left inspired to continue growing the community born between the musicians, artists, craftspeople, makers and foodies who attended.  This gathering is designed for a single purpose: to bring together a portion of the West Coast creative scene for a weekend of performance and community building in a way that celebrates and benefits the group as a whole. The emphasis in on participation; whether that be performing, making art, preparing food, offering craft projects, or by simply relaxing and engaging in conversation with those whose paths may not have yet crossed. This gathering is inspired, and with last year as evidence, has proved itself to yield excellent and unforgettable performances.

The musical acts scheduled for this year’s festival include locals Mariee Sioux, Salt Minds, Beatbeat Whisper, Helene Renaut, TV Mike and the Scarecrows and Sea of Bees, and a variety of solid out-of-towners such as Karl Blau.

Beatbeat Whisper – “Mismanaged Skies”

TV Mike and the Scarecrowes – “Paint the Town”

Sea of Bees – “Marmalade”

The festival will take place at Willow Creek Campground, and tickets are $30/day in advance, $35/day at the gate, or $60 for both days. Tickets include camping and dinner each evening. Find out more details about the festival on the Directions & Details section of the Invisible Ocean website.

Efterklang, Buke and Gass, Silian Rail, Bottom of the Hill 9/20/10

September 23, 2010

Silian Rail is an Oakland two-piece, playing instrumental post rock. A guitar surgically attached to a mound of pedals, and a stack of drums. Eric, the drummer, was able to play both guitar and drums at once, pretty impressive, and even more impressive – he also played a foot bass controller (think oversized pedals that make up an octave on a piano that you can play with your foot, and in his case your bare foot).

Though it was often dreamy, they were able to keep the audience awake with elaborate drumming, and a good amount of riffage. At one point near the end of the set Robin, the guitarist, dropped some bar chords in between her normal effervescent notes. I thought Ozzy was going to come out and bite the head off of a bat.

The music was complicated, but not a challenge. No grease can needed, for the machine is well oiled.

Buke and Gass, though also a two-piece, were different than their predecessors. Their songs shorter, their sound poppier, but just as complicated. They hail from a little known town in New York called Brooklyn. Though they are from Brooklyn they brought none of the pretenses Brooklyn is often unfairly saddled with. The frontwoman, Arone, was downright smiley.

Arone on vocals and guitar, also with a bed of pedals laid out before her, which she used skillfully and with imperception. Similarly-named Aron played guitar and a kickdrum which incubated a small infestation of tambourines. This cleverly padded the sound, making you forget they were minus a dedicated drummer.

The arrangement went beyond what you imagine a two-piece could do. I was often mystified by where sounds originated. Their song structure was distinguishable and nimble. Their music was fresh and belonged to no easy genre.

Public Works opening weekend: DJ sets from Hot Tub, DNTEL + more

September 22, 2010

Public Works SF
Another multi-use space has popped up right on the inner ring of the Mission — at 161 Erie Street (off Mission street between Duboce and 14th Streets) — offering a “zone for mixing, mingling and collaboration.” Public Works SF is throwing a weekend-long opening reception party to introduce the endless possibilities of the space. After a quick skim of the long list of DJs scheduled, I spotted Debaser‘s Jamie Jams, Hot Tub and DNTEL (The Postal Service) as highlights, but an art show and many other DJs are also on the schedule:

Friday 9/24: Capricious Fall opening art reception, (6-10pm)
Go Public: opening club event with local DJs (10pm-3am, $5)

Saturday 9/25: DJ sets from Mount Kimbie, Mary Anne Hobbs & Dntel (10pm-3am, $10)

Sunday 9/26: Honey Sound System’s Leather Disco II (6pm-2am)

You can also visit Public Works SF’s Facebook page and website for a detailed schedule of the opening weekend events. Here’s a little on SF Public Works’ philosophy:

Public Works encourages the growth of art and creativity in the Mission and San Francisco as a whole and are intent on providing a forum and a physical space for both. As part of their commitment to the Neighborhood, Public Works will donate a portion of proceeds to various local non-profits in addition to assisting these organizations with promotions and events. Root Division, a not-for-profit which brings art classes to kids in schools unable to afford such programs, is one current beneficiary

Fancy French Cologne: SF indie rockers launch new online boutique

September 21, 2010

I’m not exactly an expert on fancy ladies’ clothing (this may be something of a gigantic understatement), but I’ll trust my advisers that the new local online boutique Fancy French Cologne is something that fashionable Bay Area ladies will want to check out. Launched by former Finest Dearest bandmates Christine Bolghand and Carly Schneider-Clark, the boutique is “inspired by the classic San Francisco style: easy, wearable pieces that are never boring or blah. The boutique carries fashion-forward labels with clothing, bags and accessories that transition seamlessly from day to night, and offers a range of sophisticated handmade items customized just for the store.”

You can peruse the boutique’s offerings at FancyFrenchCologne.com, where you’ll see our own Content Director Nicole featured among the site’s models. There’s also a launch party for Fancy French Cologne this Thursday, September 23rd at Casanova Lounge (7-10pm).
