Sword & Sandals – Good & Plenty LP debuts at Viracocha Wednesday

September 20, 2010

Wednesday at Viracocha, there’s a dual release party for Birds & BatteriesChasing the Moon episode, as well as the official release of Sword + Sandals‘ debut album, Good & Plenty, out on local label Empty Cellar. In addition to the podcast screening, live music will be provided byThe Up Died Sound (NYC), Pillars & Tongues, Joseph Childress and WR/DS (8pm, $7-10 suggested donation).

WR/DS – “Untitled Track”

Sword + Sandals is the latest project from John Dywer (Thee Oh Sees) along with artist Shaun O’Dell and Randy Lee Sutherford — both of whom also play in the similar sounding free-jazz project, WR/DS. Good & Plenty is a collection of free-jazz experimentation that happened when the three indulged in an all-day, 16-microphone session which was recorded to 1-inch tape. To get a feel for the band, there are some live recordings posted on their site.

Welcome RoundMusic — a San Francisco-based company that got its start promoting house music parties, but has expanded to an eclectic record label. For their first release, RoundMusic is putting out a split 7-inch with two highly energetic, local indie pop bands: Rykarda Parasol and Mister Loveless. The split includes two previously unreleased Rykarda Parasol tracks, “Your Safety is My Concern” and an alternate version of “My Spirit Lives in Shadows,” as well as Mister Loveless’ “The Old Pain” from their Three Words EP released in May.

Show Review: Sleep, Saviours @ Regency Ballroom 9/13

September 17, 2010

Photos by: Charlie Homo

The second show of a two-night run has a strange vibe. The excitement from the debut performance is gone, and you can see it on the faces of the merch girls and the security guards — they know what to expect. So too do the repeat attenders, and there were plenty there Monday night at the Regency Ballroom, arching their eyebrows and delivering guarded prognostications of stoner metal destruction.

The weeknight bill was slightly superior. Former Bay denizens Black Cobra kicked things off with sludgy fury, taking advantage of the venue’s potent P.A., which never met a volume it didn’t like. Already one of the loudest two-man bands in existence, the duo (comprised of guitarist Jason Landrian and drummer Rafael Martinez) leaned heavily on their record Chronomega, taking advantage of the extra wattage as they pummeled the audience into submission. Set up towards the front of the stage, their proximity was an agreeably intimate introduction to a heavily-attended concert hall throwdown.

Oakland’s Saviours stormed the stage next, fresh off an Ozzfest run that introduced a nation of festival-goers to the metal party, East Bay style. While the band’s live show is as energetic as ever, an ever-increasing experience and confidence is apparent in their playing. Drummer Scott Batiste stays deep in the pocket, even when playing at frenetic tempos, and the give-and-take between the instruments seemed more assured, even leading to a clever drum and bass interlude in the middle of an otherwise adrenalized tune.

Review: Sam Amidon + Chloe Makes Music @ Cafe du Nord 9/13

September 16, 2010

For the first time since I’ve been going to Cafe du Nord, it was silent during the sets. Since it was Monday, there wasn’t a rowdy bar crowd and both Chloe Makes Music and Sam Amidon fully owned the quiet.

Singer/songwriter Chloe set the tone for the evening with her spare and traveling songs, pairing the naive quality of her voice with minor chords and dark narratives. She played tunes from her upcoming release The Puppeteer which showcases her talent for wordplay and storytelling. Cellist Jen Grady (Adam Stephens, Emily Jane White) joined her, giving warm weight to Chloe’s agile and buoyant melodies. The album, produced by Christopher Chu (The Morning Benders), is coming out this fall.

Amidon stood alone on du Nord’s stage with guitar and banjo. Filling the room with droning, lonesome songs so old no one remembers who wrote them, he held the audience’s attention wholly. His stage demeanor was eccentrically charming, telling a deadpan story of a college he played where his contract explicitly stated he would lose funding if he swore during his performance. During the solemn murder ballad, “Wild Bill Jones,” he let out a keening, long winded death moan that had the audience laughing even as he stayed true to the song’s melancholy. He closed out with a cover of “Relief” by R. Kelly and had everyone singing along. His treatment of it illuminated what he has mastered, earnestly laying bare the bones of a song.
