Lumerians: The Bay’s next great psych band?

October 26, 2010

Last night’s Aquarius Records 40th anniversary celebration was a really fun night all around, but a personal evening highlight was finally getting a chance to see San Francisco psych jammers Lumerians. Unlike a lot of the guitar-centric psychedelic acts, the quintet is all about rhythms, with a two-man percussion section that sends the songs hurtling forward, alongside repetitive, minimalist bass lines and oscillating synths. Intense, but not overly heavy, and highly recommended. The group’s light show was a little lost amidst Du Nord’s low ceilings (although there was a 3D sort of effect to having part of it projected onto the head of the guy in front of me), but I’ve heard that it too adds something special to the mix.

Lumerians – “Corkscrew Trepanation”

Lumerians – “Orgon Grinder”

Lumerians play next at The New Parish for a Halloween Masquerade Party on October 30th. Get ready for the band’s next album, which comes out in February 2011 on Knitting Factory Records.

lumerians have taken the earholes by syrup rise and washed there cloaks in the glory of something fresh.

As tired as I am of the stale psych trend I have to admit that Lumerians really have something special: good songs for starters. I’m definitely going to try to catch live them asap.
