Tomorrow, 10/23/10: Noe Valley Harvest Festival

October 22, 2010

Noe Valley Harvest Festival 2010

The Noe Valley Harvest Festival takes place Saturday, October 23rd in the heart of Noe Valley – 24th St., between Church and Sanchez. While the festival’s primary focus is the celebration of the fall season, the day’s activities will also include local music and other entertainment:

The festival is FREE and one of San Francisco’s favorite ways to say good-bye to summer and hello to fall. Sixty Bay Area artists and crafts people will display and sell their creations just in time for holiday gift giving. Also featured will be live bands, a pumpkin patch, pumpkin decorating, 2 jumpy tents, a juggler, a caricaturist, a balloon artist, face painting, a dog costume contest, a children’s costume contest, a pie eating contest, and a dunk tank (whew!) to keep you busy! This year after the festival there will be a special free screening of “Lost in the Fog” at 8pm in the public parking lot between Le Zinc and Radio Shack. Bringing the “harvest” to the Harvest Festival – the Noe Valley Farmers’ Market will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Much like the Bay Bridged’s own 2010 Rock Make Street Festival, the Noe Valley Harvest Festival will feature some talented young bands, including Rock Make alums The SHE’s and The Psychotherapists.

The festival goes from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. More information can be found on the Noe Valley Harvest Festival website.

Review/Photos: Girls, Holy Shit, The SHE’s @ The Fillmore, 10/15

The She's, Fillmore 10/15/10
Photos by: Charlie Homo

The SHE’s took the legendary Fillmore stage Friday night with their usual self-effacing charm and aplomb and unleashed a non-stop torrent of irresitable guitar-heavy pop, full of tasty hooks, impeccable playing and flawless harmonies. With giggles and sincerity, they threw down that they are ready and able to conquer any stage and get any crowd into an eccstatic frenzy.

The SHE’S – “Surfer Boys”

The She's, Fillmore 10/15/10

Although I am a shamelessly biased fan (see our preview from 10/12), the crowd confirmed that there is something truly special about the SHE’s combination of classic songs, tight musicianship and natural energy and good cheer. The new material from their EP Surfer Boys made a particularly strong impact. They left the stage to a chorus of pleas for more, and a group high that the more serious Holy Shit simply could not contend with.

GIRLS, Fillmore 10/15/10

Girls – “Laura”

What to make of Girls? It might be a recommendation when I say that, after hearing their album and seeing them play, I still find them baffling. There is something both compelling and infuriating about Christopher Owens’ emotion-drenched, extended neo-Brill Building puppy love laments. He uses repetition to draw out the longing and fragility inside his love songs, and it can be a little draining. But perhaps that’s the point.

New covers project: Hee & Him

October 20, 2010

Hee & Him

To clear up any preconceived notions, Hee & Him is not a She & Him covers project. Instead, it’s a new duo with a referential name and an arsenal of various covers, done synth-folk style.

Hee & Him is comprised of Grand Lake‘s Caleb Nichols and John Pomeroy. In their own words:

Hee & Him is a boyfriend-boyfriend synth-folk duo from California. Inspired by clearance-bin 70’s mood music records, Hee & Him combines James Taylor / John Fahey-style guitar picking, space-age, fluttering synth sounds, and sweet two part harmonies to create their own (gay) version of boy-girl folk pop.

The below video is Hee & Him’s introduction to the world – a cover of the Pixies’ “Gigantic.” According to the Hee & Him Tumblr, an all-covers compilation (Mood Music: Mixtape No. 1) from the duo will be available in January 2011.
