Crowd photos, impromptu sets + more at Treasure Island Music Festival 2010, Day 2

October 19, 2010

Editor’s Note: As anyone who made the treacherous voyage out to the island this weekend will know, Treasure Island Music Festival 2010 did not slow down due to the weather. On a rainy Sunday, the bands kept wailing and the crowds continued to enjoy entertainment from local vendors. Please enjoy these shots of festival attendees as seen by our staff.

Video: Zach Hill – “The Primitives Talk”; album ‘Face Tat’ out today

October 19, 2010

Known mostly these days for adding a whole new element to someone else’s live performance, say Wavves or Marnie Stern, Sacramento-based collaborative drummer Zach Hill releases his second solo album, Face Tat, today on Sargent House (home also to Tera Melos, Russian Circles and Fang Island). His concoctions are jarring, but find an imaginative relationship incorporating electro and hip-hop into the rock melange. Also of note, Face Tat features contributions from Devendra Banhart and Prefuse 73 as well as members of Deerhoof, Tera Melos and No Age.

The above video for “The Primitives Talk,” recently premiered on Pitchfork, stars a nail salon? Sure, why not. Stream the entire Face Tat below:

Photos & Review: The Crooked Jades @ The Episcopal Church of St. Mary 10/10

October 18, 2010

So, I went to church last Sunday. To be honest, I’m not a churchgoer, but the Episcopal Church of St. Mary hosts a neat series of free shows called Candlelight Concerts. Local old-time band The Crooked Jades played, moving easily along a wide swath of Americana music. Their work is has made its mark nationally as well; recently their song “Fork and File” was in the Sean Penn movie “Into the Wild” and they made the soundtrack for the PBS documentary “Seven Sisters: A Kentucky Portrait.”

The band played in the lucent church, framed by hundred-year-old redwood planks and candles. Their voices, keening and lonesome, brought the wilderness of old-time music into the nave. Lead singer Jeff Kazor walked the line between revivalist and whisperer, howling murder ballads and softly coaxing solemn songs. The church was the perfect space for The Crooked Jades, gathering their resonance high overhead and holding it.

If you are going to Treasure Island, swing by the ferris wheel at 2pm or 5pm (both days) to participate in our second annual Ferris Wheel Confessions, where you spill your embarrassing music-related secrets to our camera in exchange for a free ferris wheel ride. It’s a ton of fun, so we hope you can be a part of it.

Finally, to help get you through the end of another long Friday, here again are our TIMF mixtapes:
