The Definite Articles performs as a 14-piece for two record release shows

November 19, 2010

11/19-20 Definite Articles record release
The Definite Articles is a band of appreciable size and aspiration; they spent three years putting together King Merriweather, which they will perform in its entirety tonight and tomorrow at the found venue of a Presbyterian church (32 Ocean at Mission). Each night includes a different Sacramento-based folk rock supporting act — understandable, for the headliners transplanted from that area down to the Bay Area just a few years ago. Friday’s will be DoomBIRD and Saturday’s is Sea of Bees. And if you show up Saturday, you’ll be surprised with a guest performance (my lips are sealed).

The Definite Articles – “Bumbershoot”

The Bay Area-based orchestral rock band recorded the album this past summer at Tiny Telephone, with the help of many more musicians to fill out the compositions. Some of those musicians will join the performances this weekend, bulking up the band to a 14-piece. About the record:

Mixtape: The Many Sides of Tim Cohen (Podcast #238)

Our latest mixtape showcases the many sides of one of San Francisco’s best and most prolific musicians, Tim Cohen. Cohen’s latest band, The Fresh & Onlys, have been seemingly unstoppable as of late, with a series of terrific singles culminating in the acclaimed Play It Strange. As prolific as The F&Os are, it’s insane that the band’s released so many great records. This mix reveals that the same principle–quality and quantity–extends to Cohen’s other work as well. No matter what sound he’s tackled in recent years, from the experimental collage-pop of Window Twins to Cohen’s solo psych-folk, he’s able to create a multitude of compelling, offbeat tracks. Here’s a sampling of Cohen’s diverse musical output over the last half-decade.

Video: Tennis, Eulogies at Hotel Utah 11/14

November 18, 2010

That many people walked out of the Hotel Utah Sunday night without warm fuzzies, a Tennis 7″ or two in hand, or the conclusion that he or she had just discovered their new “band to watch,” is highly doubtful. It was packed to the brim with people excited to see Tennis’ first San Francisco show, just as I had expected. For me, this meant finding a spot to sit on the floor down in front, limited to bobbing my head and no chance of cutting a rug. But behind me, I saw those little sardines swaying back and forth.

Tennis trudges their surf-pop on to the Midwest through December, wrapping up tour in the UK in January (all dates on MySpace).

Listen to The Velvet Teen’s brand new EP, “No Star”

November 17, 2010

Sonoma County’s The Velvet Teen have just digitally put out their first release in about four years, a four-song EP called No Star. The band’s now a quartet — Judah Nagler, Casey Deitz, Matthew Izen and Josh Staples — and the new songs feel louder than their past stuff, but still plenty catchy.

It’s difficult for me to even try to think about this band in any critical capacity, so clouded is my perspective by nostalgia for one of the first local acts I ever truly adored. Instead, here’s the new EP in its entirety:

The band’s No Star release show is at Bottom of the Hill on January 7th (10pm, $10, All Ages).

Video: Zach Hill – “Second Life”

November 17, 2010

Here’s Zach Hill‘s latest video for the song “Second Life” from his new album, Face Tat. The song features vocals from Devendra Banhart and the video was directed by Christian “Megazord” Oldham. The clip makes me want to watch The Lawnmower Man again. I’m sure it hasn’t aged well, but I’ve always had a soft spot for the underrated Jeff Fahey.
