Ash Reiter: “Francais” video, new 7″ out on March 10th
February 17, 2011

A new dose of Ash Reiter (since last year’s Paper Diamonds) comes to us in two forms. First, the above video for “Francais” is scenic and sunny, perfectly matching the song’s bright, easygoing folk. And second, Ash Reiter is scheduled to release a new 7″, Marooned, which comes out on March 10th.
Marooned will be celebrated at Cafe du Nord on March 10th, when Wave Array and Buckeye Knoll are also scheduled to perform (9:00 pm, $12, 21+).

Austin Psych Fest 4 books Fresh & Onlys, Lumerians, The Soft Moon, Young Prisms
February 17, 2011

If you can rationalize heading out to Austin twice in two months, then we advise catching both SxSW and the Austin Psych Fest 4 (April 29-May 1 at the Mexitas Event Center). There’s a broad definition of psych music in the bands serving as the main attractions at APF4 this year: The Black Angels, Roky Erickson, Atlas Sound, Crystal Stilts and Black Moth Super Rainbow. The latest round of festival additions included Lumerians, The Soft Moon and Young Prisms, and announced before that, The Fresh & Onlys, all of local distinction.
The 3-day festival has already sold out of $85 weekend passes since they went on sale Sunday; the price has now gone up to $100 for weekend-long tickets. Another round of lineup additions, the official daily schedule, and info about purchasing single-day tickets will be announced on the festival website on March 1. The full lineup is after the jump.

One of the perennial highlights of the annual Noise Pop Festival is the series of free Happy Hour shows that takes place at Bender’s all week long. The Bay Bridged is proud to host the Happy Hour show on Friday, February 25th, featuring three great local bands. Between the great beer selection at Bender’s and some kick-ass rock and roll, this show is a great way to blow off some steam on a Friday afternoon.

Shannon and the Clams – “Sleep Talk”
Jake Mann & The Upper Hand – “Days Are Long”
Wet Illustrated – “Born Stoked”
To call Shannon and the Clams‘ upcoming garage pop album Sleep Talk anticipated is something of an understatement, and we can’t wait to hear some new songs at the Happy Hour show. Meanwhile, Jake Mann & The Upper Hand just released its second full length of power pop-influenced rock, Parallel South, to some very strong reviews. Kicking off the Happy Hour is Wet Illustrated. After releasing an acclaimed Tim Cohen-recorded 7″ last year, the band’s currently working on new songs and planning new recordings.

New on Anticon: introducing Antonionian (Jordan Dalrymple of Subtle/13 & God), sophomore record from 13 & God
February 16, 2011

Like many of the Anticon label artists who hail from the Bay Area, yet another new act arises from Oakland: Antonionian. With the announcement of Jordan Dalrymple’s debut LP comes a lengthy Anticon resume: he’s a member of Subtle and 13 & God, and toured with cLOUDDEAD and Yoni Wolf (in the proto-WHY? project Reaching Quiet). Antonionian’s self-titled LP is out March 15th, and he’s playing an album release show on March 23rd at the Rickshaw Stop (8pm, $10).
Antonionian – “Into the Night”
In other exciting Anticon news, 13 & God is back with their sophomore release, Own Your Ghost, this spring. How a music project spans continents is beyond me, but nonetheless, I’ll be biting my nails down over the next few months waiting on this record to drop. It’s been a good six years since the collaboration between The Notwist, Themselves, and Subtle members last struck a note in unison. Enjoy the video teaser for “Armored Scarves,” which will be one of ten songs out May 17th:

Interview – Kid Koala on “Music to Draw to…” series: “It’s really quite an amazing thing to see.”
February 16, 2011

Montreal’s Kid Koala (aka Eric San) is known both as an innovative turntablist and skilled visual artist, and he’s combined those two loves in his “Music to Draw to…” series of events. The concept is pretty unique: attendees are encouraged to bring their own artistic projects to the shows, which they work on while San spins “quiet time” records and his wife serves hot chocolate and baked goods. It’s an idea that both challenges expectations about what a “concert experience” should be and highlights the important role that music plays in artistic and cultural life. From the sound of it, it’s also highly conducive to getting a whole lot of creative work done.
Via email, I discussed the innovative series with Kid Koala, in anticipation of the upcoming February 26th “Music to Draw to…” event at Public Works (12-4pm), which is a part of Noise Pop’s Culture Club (12-6pm, $10/15). Kid Koala will also be performing a much louder set at Mighty on February 25th.
How did the idea for “Music to Draw to” shows come about?
It started in the winter time in Montreal (where it’s -30 degrees Celsius) We really wanted to do a low-key event that would bring people out of hibernation or their self-imposed studio cells. There are a lot of creative people in Montreal that don’t leave their houses for all of January to March. Also, my wife Corinne hopes to open a bakery in the city one day… she gets to try out her new recipes at her bake sale which we set up so people can go get a snack if they need a break from working.
How have the recent “Music to Draw to” shows been going? Have you seen any of the projects people have been working on during the sets?
The nights have been going really well. It started as primarily a drawing and painting event… but any of the other quiet time arts qualify. Some people bring clay to sculpt, other people will bring laptops and do a bunch of 3D rendering of character designs (there are a lot of game developers in Montreal), animators will bring light tables, the list goes on… At the New York “Music to Draw to…” someone actually brought a dress form and was designing and sewing clothes. When we brought the soiree to Los Angeles, some people showed up and started chiseling things out of wood and sandstone. Someone at the Toronto “Music to Draw to…” actually brought a loom and was making this crazy tapestry!
What makes a good “quiet time” record?
Usually it’s a record that you can put on repeat and not notice the time passing. Those are usually the best records for working or getting in that zone.
Are there records that you’ve found are too quiet even for “quiet time”? Are there any records you’ve played at one of these shows that turn out to be too loud or distracting?
