Videos of Noise Pop 2011: The Soft Moon, Geographer, Best Coast and more

March 31, 2011

I had a particularly hard time as a photographer during Noise Pop this year. An attentive audience can get a little agitated by a person, credentialed or not, holding a camera up for an entire song. But just remember — in the time it took that song to start and end, someone captured something tangible for later reminiscing. Bamm.tv captured some of the memories of Noise Pop 2011 in live footage for the Noise Pop YouTube channel for your endless reminiscing pleasure, including this Geographer clip, and sets from Best Coast and Dan Deacon.

We also came across some attendee-generated footage of Noise Pop: a clip of The Concretes and one from The Soft Moon’s projector-sexy performance supporting Tamaryn:

New Vetiver album out via Sub Pop on 6/14/11 – ‘The Errant Charm’

Vetiver - The Errant Charm

As Pitchfork reported yesterday, Vetiver‘s new album will be called The Errant Charm and is scheduled for release on June 14th via Sub Pop. Check out “Can’t You Tell,” for streaming now (or download via email):

“Can’t You Tell” is classic Vetiver – warm and easygoing folk, woven loosely together with plenty of indie pop hooks. There don’t appear to be any local Vetiver shows scheduled in the known future, but don’t be surprised if a full Errant Charm tour is announced sooner rather than later.

Contest update: deadline extended for youth bands to apply for free recording time at Tiny Telephone’s Minitel

March 31, 2011

Just wanted to drop a brief note about our ongoing contest to give away a free week of analog recording in the last week of April at Tiny Telephone‘s new B studio, Minitel, with free house engineer Jamie Riotto and a string arrangement from the Magik*Magik Orchestra.

While we’ve received a number of great entries, we’ve decided to extend the deadline to apply for the contest! The previous deadline to apply was Friday, April 1, with a round of open voting scheduled to take place the next week. The new deadline to apply is April 8 at noon. Instead of open voting for finalists, we’ll present all of the submitted bands to our judges.

Below a reminder about the rules and how to apply:

How This Contest Works

This is a contest for San Francisco Bay Area bands in high school and below. In order to qualify, a majority of your band members have to be age 17 or under.

To enter, submit the below information to thebaybridged[at]gmail.com by Friday, April 8 at noon. From those submissions, our judges will pick a winning band and announce the winner on April 11.

If you want to enter your band, send the following information to thebaybridged[at]gmail.com with the subject “Minitel Contest”:

- The name of your band
- The names and ages of the band’s members
- A link to a Facebook or MySpace page (or other web site) for your band
- A short bio describing your band
- A brief description of what you want to do with the recording time (e.g., work on a single, an album, etc.)
- If possible, include an mp3 recording of what your band sounds like
- If possible, include a link to a YouTube/Vimeo video of your band performing

Please remember that some of this information may be posted on our web site.

Listen to Moon Duo’s new album at self-titled

March 30, 2011

Over at self-titled right now, you can stream Moon Duo‘s new album Mazes, out now on Sacred Bones. Additionally, Ripley Johnson from the Duo provided song-by-song commentary, discussing how the new record was influenced by the band’s decision to leave San Francisco for Colorado.

About the album’s final track:

Another song about leaving SF. I have a line in here—”I like to talk a lot, about being gone”—which will make sense to friends of mine. For years I would talk about cool places I’d like to live but never pull the trigger. Part of that is because San Francisco is such a great place that it’s hard to leave. And even after having moved it only feels temporary.

Sunday: fourth annual Switchboard Music Festival celebrates Bay Area musicians

March 30, 2011

Birds & Batteries

Birds & Batteries – “Strange Kind of Mirror”

It’s great to see annual happenings in San Francisco music, so we are pleased to share information about Switchboard Music Festival’s fourth occurrence this Sunday, April 3 at the Brava Theater (24th & York, 2-10pm). Celebrating local musicians and their diverse creations, this year’s lineup is topped off with Birds & Batteries, but enlists a unique variety of acts, from jazz quartets and experimental “scratch guitar,” to the traditional big band ensemble. To get a sampling of the 2011 lineup, Switchboard has compiled a podcast series!

More details regarding ticket sales can be found on the SMF site:

The 2011 Festival presents some of the Bay Area’s most original performers, including Causing a Tiger, an all-star group featuring Carla Kihlstedt (Tin Hat Trio), and up-and-coming indie band Birds & Batteries. Other performers include Erik Jekabson and the Bay Area Composers Big Band, The Genie, Gojogo, Telepathy, and Wiener Kids. Switchboard also presents living composers whose work challenges traditional ideas of notated music, including Dan Becker, William Brittelle, Ryan Brown, and Jonathan Russell. In addition, sound artist Loren Chasse will create a work specifically for the unique environment of the Brava Theater.
