SXSW Recovery, Relapse, Lust

March 25, 2011

It’s been 48 hours since returning from Austin and I feel about halfway recovered. With free beer flowing from noon daily, one can easily overdo the Shiner Bock. Add to that the 2am jalapeno special at Hoek’s Death Metal Pizza, a few orders of Migas from Maria’s Taco Xpress, some Salt Lick BBQ . . . let’s just say my belly ain’t feeling quite right. Attempts to see 14 bands a day makes it hard to sleep what with all the ear ringing. While I often wish the Bay Area could put on a festival 1/100th of this magnitude, I’m not sure I could handle it right now. I may not even make it out this weekend, but you should.

Make yourself a mini SXSW of your very own!

One of the many SXSW delights this year was the Burger Boogaloo and miraculously San Francisco will host a very similar Boogaloo this weekend. The lineup has already been posted on the Bay Bridged, but here are a few highlights as encouragement.

Submitted for your approval, King Tuff, from Brattleboro Vermont seen here at the amazing Urban Outfitter party last Friday in Austin, and headlining Thee Parkside tonight! Like an unmasked Nobunny with raw garage power to spare. Get there early, you don’t want to miss local legend King Lollipop featuring Cody from Shannon and the Clams! Enjoy Jersey’s Personal and the Pizzas, SF’s Rantouls and Wrong Words while you’re at it.

Tonight: Bob Mould DJs at Distortion+

March 25, 2011

After moving to SF in 2009, Bob Mould, rock legend/DJ/remixer/author (whose autobiography See a Little Light: The Trail of Rage and Melody comes out June 15), reached out to Chris Xefos, producer/engineer/musician/writer, about starting a bimonthly DJ night. That party is Distortion+, which features the duo spinning “the sounds of loud guitars coupled with melodic songs: indie rock/pop, punk, post-punk, psych, shoegaze…all presented in a relaxed atmosphere so folks can get their (music) geek on while hanging out and socializing with friends in a unique setting.”

If that sounds good to you, the latest Distortion+ party is tonight, March 25th, at The Lone Star (1354 Harrison Street, 9:30pm).

Video: Man/Miracle live at the Hemlock

March 24, 2011

This video is several high-rung steps above the slightly shaky, off-the-cuff smartphone concert videos that we’ve grown accustomed to seeing. Matthew Rome brought a whole crew to the Hemlock to film Man/Miracle in action, and it seems that the extra effort was worth it, as the end result is excellent from top to bottom.

Man/Miracle will be at the Great American Music Hall on April 26th, opening for tUnE-yArDs (8:00 pm, $15).

The Morning Benders release new EP to support Japan earthquake relief

The Morning Benders - Japan Echo EP

The Morning Benders decided to show their support for Japan in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake the only way they know how – by releasing a special Japan Echo EP. The EP is available for purchase for as low as $5 and as high as $100, and 100% of the proceeds will go to the Japan Society Earthquake Relief Fund.

Japan Echo EP is available via The Morning Benders’ website. In the words of frontman Chris Chu:

Last week we were scheduled to go to Tokyo to play our first show ever in Japan. It was going to be a very special trip, and for me in particular. I had always dreamt of going back to Japan to play music. Not many people know this, but I was actually born in Japan, and although I only lived there for a couple years, I’ve always had a deep love for the country and its people. I cannot express how sad and helpless I’ve felt reading about everything that is happening there right now, and even though we couldn’t be there, we wanted to do everything we could to help.

We love you Japan.

xo,
Chris

Tracklist:

  1. Cold War (Star Slinger Remix)
  2. Better In Blue
  3. Hand Me Downs (Wild Nothing Remix)
  4. Excuses (RAC Remix)
  5. Mason Jar (Twin Sister Remix)
  6. Wet Cement (Aislyn Remix)
  7. Little Riot
  8. Promises (Star Slinger Remix)
