Video: Sea of Bees performs new song “Crooked Teeth” on Record Store Day

April 21, 2011

We’re used to getting treats on Record Store Day, but usually those that require a fight to the vinyl stacks or the hope that the person in front of you isn’t pining for the same Arthur Russell LP.

The crowd at Armadillo Music in Davis was rewarded for their patience with a brand new song from Sacramento’s Sea of Bees, which won’t be recorded for some time. Amongst friends and patrons of the record store, Julie Baezinger played an intimate set full of her solo performance nuances — she distracts herself and the audience with the story behind “Crooked Teeth.”

Adding to the comedy of this video, a toddler coughs (most likely on the goldfish crackers she had been grinding into Armadillo’s carpet), smoothly transitioning Jules out of her endearing banter and into playing the song. (Note: please forgive the audio glitches, I wasn’t properly prepared for recording a video, but couldn’t resist the opportunity to share a new song with the world).

“Crooked Teeth” is arguably the most honest Julie Baezinger has ever been in her music about coming out, being about her first kiss. By the second verse and into the bridge, you start to feel the intensity that will surely be more powerful when the song is arranged in the studio. It might be difficult to fully soak this song up within the live, acoustic environment, but we suspect that her work post-Songs for the Ravens will be her best yet! No official recording time or upcoming releases have been announced just yet, so stay tuned.

Video: The Heavenly States – “Berlin Wall,” featuring Britt Daniel from Spoon

April 21, 2011

The mutual respect between the Heavenly States and indie rock heavy-hitters Spoon is not a new development. The Heavenly States opened for the band during Spoon’s 3-night residency at the Fillmore back in 2008, when Britt Daniel made sure to inform the Fillmore audiences how much he enjoyed the Heavenly States’ Delayer. In fact, I distinctly recall Britt saying during one of the shows that Spoon hand-picked the local band to open because Delayer was “one of the best albums we’ve heard all year.” In our recent interview with the Heavenly States, the band elaborates on the connection with Spoon and Britt’s contribution to the EP.

The Heavenly States – “Model Son”

The new EP (Oui Camera Oui) from the Heavenly States is out now via Hippies Are Dead Records, featuring Britt Daniel on vocals for the second track, “Berlin Wall.” The video for the song premiered yesterday on Rolling Stone and is embedded above, complete with eclectic animation from Kristoffer West Johnson.

For those interested in hearing more, Oui Camera Oui is streaming in full via Aol Music.

Judgement Day release rarities album, currently on tour with Pinback

Judgement Day - B•Sides

When string metal trio Judgement Day reached their Kickstarter goal for “An Epic Acoustic Metal Record,” they originally intended to provide a 15-track compilation of rarities to the fans who donated (among other thank-you gifts). After re-evaluating, however, and discovering how pleased they were with the overall result, the band decided to open up B•Sides to a wider audience.

B•Sides, a collection representing 8 years of making music as a band, is available via Judgement Day’s Bandcamp.

Judgement Day is currently on tour with Pinback (all dates after the jump). A hometown show will take place (without Pinback, but with TBA “special guests”) at the Uptown on May 13th (9:00 pm, $10). In the meantime, be sure to check out Judgement Day’s recent trip to the Daytrotter studios.

While we’re on an East Bay music high today, please enjoy a few videos from Yalls and SAFE. Yalls aka Dan Casey cued up some scenes of his backyard in Berkeley and a BBQ in Oakland to the track “Run Deep.” The rest of the How Much We Have Lost EP as well as Casey’s January-released EP are posted on bandcamp.

Out of Oakland, SAFE began a series of live videos that the band says will be posted periodically. The first is for the track “HATESONG,” performed live and acoustic. SAFE is in the process of recording a new album, but their EP and other recordings are posted to their bandcamp.

The Horns of Happiness

Mixtape: Only the East Bay (Podcast #247)

This podcast episode is part mixtape and part mea culpa. Even though our name is The Bay Bridged, we periodically get people calling us out on our SF-centric coverage of Bay Area indie music. In recognition of all of the great music coming from the other side of the Bay, this mix features only East Bay artists–15 of them–spanning a wide variety of styles and sounds. The collection shows that, just like in SF, there’s a diverse batch of talent in Oakland and beyond that’s well worth checking out.

Subscribe to The Bay Bridged Podcast!

Standard disclaimers here: obviously, this mix is not intended to be comprehensive, and we’ve omitted a few artists who have been showing up in a lot of our podcasts lately (sorry Shannon and the Clams, tUnE-YarDs, and Bare Wires!). If you’re curious for more of the East Bay music scene, in addition to our blog, you should also check out Ear Bud, Bay Area Bourgeois, and Mapzzz as well.

B.O.B. stands for Bath, Oakland and Bremen. The B.O.B. Festival is held every 2 years and rotates among these 3 cities united in punk rock. The first major gathering took place in Bath, UK in 1995 and the last Oakland B.O.B. fest was in 2005. It all starts tonight with a pub crawl from Heinold’s to Merchants, Beer Revolution and Linden Street Brewery where there will be live punk karaoke.

The fest continues tomorrow at Eli’s Mile High Club with SF’s very own punk mastermind Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine headlining. Thursday is held at Hazmat with Berkeley cowpunks Gr’ups, Oakland’s Everything Must Go and more. UK invades Friday at the Victory Warehouse featuring The Restarts and A-Heads. Saturday features UK’s legendary Subhumans (formed in 1980) at Oakland’s great new home of punk, the Oakland Metro Operahouse.

The finale on Sunday is an all day affair at Linden Street with a Cyclecide Bike Rodeo and yet more local hardcore from the Undead Boys plus punk rock can-can from The Can Cannibals! Review & Photos: The Residents @ Bimbos, 4/16/11

April 19, 2011

Shrouded in mystery, The Residents may have come to SF in 1972 from Shreveport Louisiana. The story goes that they met in high school and headed west in 1966. The truck broke down in San Mateo where they stayed for a few years making their first recordings in 1969. The first appearance with the name The Residents was indeed at SF’s Boarding House in 1971. Fast forward through 1976′s Third Reich ‘n’ Roll, giant eyeball heads and 1979′s eerie Eskimo. I was 10 at that time and my brother challenged me to listen to that frozen tundra of a disc all the way though . . . if I was cool enough. It was the only time I ever listened to it. One thing is sure: The Residents will always be light years ahead of everything.

80+ records and 20+ movies later, cut to Bimbos with the Love Boat bartenders and sexy mermaid paintings. There couldn’t be a finer stage for them. It’s a full house all seated around small tables on night 2 of an impressive 2-night gig. It is the last show of The Talking Light Tour and The Residents are a 3 piece. They were a 4 piece for 40 years, but apparently “Carlos has had enough of the Rock and Roll life, and he is back in Mexico caring for his mom. Fuck Carlos!”, screams Randy the singer/storyteller.

Randy has got to be in his 60s but he looked extra old and scary in his mask, boxers, tie and robe. Standing in his living room in front of the doily strewn couch and cabinet topped with a black and white fuzz tv, furry lamp and gingerbread man, he brings to mind the neighbors you never wanted to get to know. Later he puts on a furry white jacket with x-mas lights peeking though. The shimmery lining is all black skulls.
