Antenna Farm Records says: We Are All Awesome

May 19, 2011

Antenna Farm Records - We Are All Awesome

Antenna Farm Records is a local record label, a label that champions the Bay Area and beyond by selecting talented, hard-working artists and releasing their records. The label’s past and present roster includes Papercuts, The Donkeys, The Botticellis, Still Flyin’, Bart Davenport, Agent Ribbons, and many more.

To commemorate their efforts and to show appreciation for the artists on their roster, the Antenna Farm folks are releasing a free compilation, entitled We Are All Awesome:

Every once in a while, we at Antenna Farm are reminded of how lucky we are to be doing what we’re doing: working with some of the most talented musicians and creative artists we know, doing our small part to bring their work to the world at large.

And with that, we are pleased to release a brand new compilation of some of our favorite tracks from the last few years. We Are All Awesome is a love letter back to these great musicians and a tribute to their craft. Featuring some of our favorite cuts from the last few years worth of AF releases, this is a great way to get yourself acquainted, or re-acquainted with the Antenna Farm catalog.

A free digital download of the 15-song compilation will be sent to those interested in exchange for signing up for the label’s mailing list (which sends out monthly updates). Additionally, a free CD version of the compilation is available, and though you will have to pay a small shipping fee, the fee will be waived if you purchase any other title from Antenna Farm’s catalog.

Barn Owl – “Shadowland”

Barn Owl - Shadowland

Barn Owl – “Shadowland”

As we near the release of Barn Owl‘s Shadowland, out on Thrill Jockey on June 23, the EP’s title track has been exposed for listening. This three-song, 23 minute EP promises a ride through the galaxies via minimalist, droned out guitar (they’re sort of Bay Area Sunn O))), allowing just enough time for a quick yoga sesh at sunrise. About the record, from the label:

The new material on Shadowland takes inspiration from the devotional sounds of Popol Vuh and Alice Coltrane and also possesses the pitch black weightlessness of Fushitsusha and early Tangerine Dream. With waves of guitar soaring over liquid synthesizers tones, Barn Owl combine lush, melancholic serenity with cacophonous, deconstructed guitar to exhibit a visceral meeting of light and dark. Cyclical themes were explored heavily: mantric guitar processions, swelling bass waves, and fluttering tremolo hypnotism.

Barn Owl is currently on a European tour with Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, returning to the states in early August. US tourdates are TBD for late summer and fall, with another record to follow.

Mixtape: SF Popfest 2011 (Episode #249)

Over the past several years, the San Francisco Popfest has emerged as a highly anticipated annual treat, a weekend-long celebration of indie pop music that mixes a bunch of exciting out-of-town names with some of the best local bands. This year’s Popfest, taking place from May 25-29, features over 30 bands in six shows around the City, with a wealth of potential highlights. From out of town, we’re especially excited for a rare SF performance by legendary punk-pop band The Undertones, London’s Allo Darlin’, and Captured Tracks bands Catwalk and The Beets. On the local front, Slumberland Records is hosting a showcase featuring the label’s many exciting acts, and, in other shows, local favorites like The Mantles, Blackbird Blackbird and Dominant Legs will all be performing.

We’ll be counting down to Popfest with some more in-depth previews and features over the next week. For now, sample over 20 Popfest bands in this hour-long mixtape and check out the full schedule of events below.

White Cloud – “I Know It” / “Sundew”

May 18, 2011

White Cloud - photo by Charlie Homo

“I Know It” and “Sundew” make up the first single from White Cloud‘s most recent studio visit, available to stream on their Bandcamp site. White Cloud recorded a batch of songs with Jason Kick of Maus Haus that they will likely unveil via their Facebook page, until plans are announced for the full-length release.

White Cloud has always done their own thing, which is admirable: the band members switch instruments mid-set, and build on one another’s qualities for some really stellar post-rock/shoegaze style jams. Together as one, this fresh pair of songs effloresce — building up those robust, reverb-happy guitar lines, bursting into rounds of vocals or a segmented dancy bassline. There’s this strange, subtle echo of Robin Pecknold under all those vocals, though nothing else about either of these tracks really could pass as Fleet Foxes-influenced.

White Cloud’s next show is June 25 at Bottom of the Hill with The Wooden Birds (yes, the American Analog Set spawn!) and The Definite Articles (9pm, $10). Don’t worry – we’ll send out another reminder closer to the show.
