Julianna Barwick is performing at Aquarius at 4pm today

June 22, 2011

Julianna Barwick – “The Magic Place”

If you are the kind of person who can swing over to Aquarius Records at 4pm today, first off, I envy you and your lifestyle. More importantly, though, if you are indeed such a person, you should head there then to catch a free in-store performance by Julianna Barwick, whose ambient songs built out of layered vocal loops should be especially moving in AQ’s intimate quarters. If you can’t make it there, Barwick is opening for Okkervil River at The Fox later tonight (7:30pm, $25).

The Wooden Birds are in SF on 6/25/11 (the Definite Articles and White Cloud opening)

The Wooden Birds, the Definite Articles, White Cloud at BOTH 6/25/11

Andrew Kenny, soft vocals in tow and American Analog Set history tucked neatly away, will be playing with the rest of the Wooden Birds this Saturday, June 25th at Bottom of the Hill (10:00 pm, $10/advance, $12/door). The band’s sophomore album, Two Matchsticks, is out now and follows quite nicely in Magnolia‘s footsteps (the band’s 2009 debut) – both albums tread warmly on dynamic, rhythmic indie rock, with the easygoing electric guitar leading the way from song to song.

The Wooden Birds – “Two Matchsticks”

The Definite Articles – “Sea Things”

White Cloud – “Trance State”

Check out the Wooden Birds for yourself this Saturday, and be sure to arrive early to catch local openers the Definite Articles (supporting their latest, King Merriweather) and White Cloud (who recently released a new single).

Lost In The Glare is out September 13th, and that news is accompanied by the cool cover artwork and anticipation-building label announcement that I’ve come to expect from these guys. Listen to Shadowland‘s title track above, and check out more about the new LP below.

John Vanderslice and the Magik*Magik Orchestra, 6/17/11 at the Herbst Theatre

We tend to avoid reviewing shows we present, but it would be difficult to offer up these great photos without acknowledging that Friday night’s John Vanderslice/Magik*Magik Orchestra concert was truly awe-inspiring, in a way that few shows are likely to match this year. If you were there, you know what I mean. If you weren’t? Well, I hope John and the Orchestra consider breaking their vow that the performance was a one-time-only affair.

Review & Photos: Emily Bonn & The Vivants, Diana Jones, The Wild Reeds, Old Man Ludecke @ Amnesia, 6/16

Emily Bonn and the Vivants – “Riot At The Rite Spot”

In a recent column I implied that the scene around Amnesia might have lost some of its vitality. I am happy to report that I was wrong. Emily Bonn and The Vivants, expert local western house rockers, brought a bill that featured support from as far off as Nashville and the Great White North here Thursday night to a packed and raucous house.

Old Man Ludecke hails from around Nova Scotia, and not only was this his first show in San Francisco, it was his first night in San Francisco ever! “Well, I rented a car here once,” he qualified.

Ludecke delivers wry original ballads with an endearing talking-blues style. His songs are gentle and self-deprecating without laying on anything too heavy or deliberate. One of his compositions spoofed his inability to yodel with the lines, “Yo de lay/You’re the lady of my dreams.”

Los Angeles trio The Wild Reeds also made their San Francisco debut, looking the nervous novices as they sound checked a promising array of gear – mandolin, autoharp, harmonium, banjo, vintage Danelectro. They hit another gear once they played and sang together. Their material, playing, harmonies, and their energy were all clicking for the assembled. Their finale of the Boswell Sisters’ arrangement of “St. Louis Blues” elicited a particularly robust response.
