Speculator – “Jenny Says”
July 29, 2011

Not much mention has been made of Speculator yet here as a local musician. Speculator is Nick Ray, the guy who relocated his one-man party from Los Angeles to Oakland only recently and moved in with his pals Weekend (he remixed “Comma Summer” for their last 7″). “Jenny Says” is Nick Ray’s latest, probably the kind of fuzzy, darker-meaning pop song for those who enjoy Melted Toys. The track will appear on Speculator’s second full-length Nice, slated for an August 30 release on Underwater Peoples.
Enjoy it and others next Friday when Speculator performs with Terry Malts and Young Prisms somewhere in the Dogpatch.

Pregnant – ‘Life Hard: I Try’ out September 6 on Mush Records, stream now
July 29, 2011

Not long ago did Northern Californian Daniel Trudeau aka Pregnant release Regional Music (we wrote it up in April). His new collection Life Hard: I Try comes out September 6 on Mush Records, but is already streaming online.
Maybe it’s not common to associate glitchy, heavy sampling with a sensitive pop song. Regardless, that’s exactly Pregnant. Record after record, Trudeau’s songwriting gains amorphous, unreserved quality. This is fitting, seeing as the fourth LP Trudeau himself claims is “an ode to all the outsiders.” The music of Pregnant is something truly understood when experienced live, which happened for some in San Francisco a few months ago at the Yours Truly x Terroreyes.tv screening party: [More...]

Little Wings: two tapes out on Gnome Life Records, co-headlining Regional Bias on August 6th!
July 29, 2011

HALLOWEEN 2020 by LITTLE WINGS by Gnome Life Records
“Halloween 2020″ comes from Made It Rain, a new cassette from Little Wings, who is co-headlining our Regional Bias fundraiser/birthday party on August 6th.
The new tape is out now on Gnome Life Records. Says the label:
This tape is a direct transmission from the mind of Kyle Field (A.K.A. Little Wings)… brain waves reflected off a storm cloud and the nearby ocean… song droplets from Kyle and the windy mother. A chill out tape of eclectic covers, Little Wings classics remixed, a little story telling, and a fully new song to boot.
Recorded on cassette tape live in The Dream Yurt, high on the cliffs of Big Sur, California, above the Pacific Ocean, one late night in May 2011, in the midst of a gentle but unrelenting rain storm which eventually cut the party short by outing the power. “Made it Rain” is a wild artifact from the wild west.
Field’s recent Black Grass is also seeing reissue as a tape for Gnome Life. Listen to a song from that great album below.

Counting down to Regional Bias: Why your support is so important!
July 29, 2011

We’re a little over one week away from our annual Regional Bias concert (and our fifth birthday party!), taking place on August 6th at the Verdi Club in San Francisco (7pm, $10-20, tickets on sale now!). As we’ve said before, even though Regional Bias is a fundraiser, our top priority is making it a really fun, special night for everyone who attends. To that end, we’ve got four great bands performing — Little Wings and Royal Baths, White Cloud, and Sea of Bees — as well as DJs, art, and more.
Entertainment value aside, though, there’s another reason to buy tickets to Regional Bias to which we’ve already alluded. Your tickets help support the work of The Bay Bridged, our fiscally-sponsored nonprofit project dedicated to championing the best of Bay Area indie music. This year, we’ve continued to grow our support of local music, throwing a brand new free festival in Phono del Sol, and beefing up our blog coverage of local indie music with more posts about more bands. That’s in addition to our upcoming annual Rock Make Street Festival, other concerts we help promote and produce, and a whole bunch of other projects (online and offline) that we have currently in the pipeline.
Your support, by attending Regional Bias, will help us continue to do all of these things and more. It means the world to us to champion the amazing and wide-ranging collection of talented musicians who call the San Francisco Bay Area home, and we greatly appreciate any help you can offer. But even if the “out of the goodness of your heart” pitch doesn’t work, just know that Regional Bias 2011 is going to be a great night of excellent local music that you won’t want to miss. We’ll see you there!
All the best,
The Bay Bridged

Video: Emily Jane White – “Oh Katherine”/”Black Silk”
July 28, 2011
SF singer-songwriter Emily Jane White recently returned home from what was, I’m sure, another extremely successful tour of Europe. White’s latest album, Ode to Sentience, hasn’t yet come out stateside, a fact that, when you receive the volume of press releases announcing horrible-sounding new records that we do, takes on an extra level of frustration. We’ve known for years that Emily cuts great live videos, and this two-video set recorded by a Munich-based site is apparently White’s favorite session from her recent press run.
Emily Jane White and her band open for David J of Bauhaus/Love & Rockets on Friday, July 29th at the Red Devil Lounge (9pm, $12).

Video: Steve Taylor – “Hey Lady”
July 28, 2011
Steve Taylor has played and recorded with a number of bands in his time – Rogue Wave, Vetiver, Avi Buffalo, The Botticellis and more – but he’s somehow also managed to find time for his own music. Mixing psych, folk and soul into a classic-sounding pop melange, Taylor and his band are performing at The Independent on Saturday, July 30th (9pm, $10), with A B and the Sea and Benyaro.
In the above video, from the third annual Mother Hips Family Hipnic in Big Sur in May, Taylor performs a soft-pop gem joined by Andy Cabic (Vetiver), Eric Johnson (Fruit Bats) and Farmer Dave Scher.
