Sea of Bees – “Gnomes (Tunng Remix)” (playing at Regional Bias on 8/6!)

HVN223 Sea Of Bees – Gnomes (Tunng Remix) by heavenlyrecordings
We can’t think of a better way to kick off our Regional Bias fundraiser on August 6th than with a performance by Sacramento’s Sea of Bees. Julie Baenziger’s stunning indie folk-rock project is about to release its third single from Songs For the Ravens, and Gnomes, out August 15th 23rd, features the title track, the above remix by Tunng, and two unexpected covers. Blue Oyster Cult and U2 aren’t exactly names that come to mind when you think Sea of Bees, but that makes me all the more curious to hear Baenziger tackle “Don’t Fear The Reaper” and “With Or Without You.”

Rohnert Park hardcore heroes Ceremony sign to Matador (and what that means)
July 26, 2011

Ceremony has a pretty interesting story. They’re considered one of the Bay Area’s highly notable punk/hardcore bands, and at the same time, they are making inroads in the “indie community” the same way that Fucked Up has recently. The band’s last record, Rohnert Park, was a contender on plenty of best-of lists in 2010 that also recognized indie fare like Halycon Digest, Have One On Me, and others. Now, after signing to Matador Records, Ceremony’s admired self-destruction will effectively spread to more diverse crowds in all the cities worldwide where they’ve already left an serious impression.
The band plans to release a full-length studio record with Matador sometime next year. In the meantime, they have “new” music in the form of a covers record available now on Bridge Nine. Ceremony covers by “Public Opinion” by Urban Waste, “Nimrod’s Son” by The Pixies, “Holocaust” by Crisis, “American Society” by Eddie and the Subtitles, “5 to 10″ by Vile and “Pink Flag” by Wire.

Noise Pop and Another Planet have announced the full lineup for the 2011 Treasure Island Music Festival, and, as in previous years, this lineup is a doozy. King Khan, King Lollipop and other royalty: 1-2-3-4 GO! Anniversary Fest 7/23/11 (night 2)

Sneaky Pinks
Night 2 began with Elvis Christ. A supergroup of sorts, but I couldn’t tell ya who’s who. There may be a connection to the great Uzi Rash that opened yesterday’s bash.

Elvis Christ

King Lollipop
Then the first King appeared! King Lollipop came with a complete set of drumming minstrels. Shannon (of the Clams) played some fine cowbell. Hunx (of the Punx) banged away. The King stood alone on the other side of the stage lookin’ as usual like Mortimer Mouse (astutely pointed out by Shannon in a recent TBB interview). It’s getting harder to find a YouTube video of that amazing character. Check it out now before the evil Disney empire takes it away!
