Magic Trick (Tim Cohen) – “Daylight Moon”

July 22, 2011

Magic Trick (Tim Cohen) – “Daylight Moon”

Tim Cohen‘s birthday was Tuesday, and Empty Cellar Records celebrated by releasing a limited edition version of Cohen’s upcoming album, The Glad Birth of Love. Credited to Tim’s band Magic Trick, the album contains four songs, of which “Daylight Moon” is the only one that clocks in at under ten minutes. Yes, this is some ambitious, genre-blurring stuff from one of SF’s most talented artists.

The Glad Birth of Love features guest appearances by John Dwyer (Thee Oh Sees), Grace Cooper (The Sandwitches), Diego Gonzalez (The Dry Spells, Citay), and more. The limited-to-100-copies edition “comes in an elegant old-style tip-on jacket” with an 11″ x 22″ poster. If money is currently tight, know that the album will see wide release on August 23rd.

Treasure Island lineup coming Monday: commence baseless speculation now

July 22, 2011

St. Vincent – “Surgeon”

According to the festival’s web site, the lineup for the 2011 Treasure Island Music Festival will be revealed on Monday, so it seems like as good a time as any to engage in some wild speculation about who will or won’t be performing. Consequence of Sound has been collecting a batch of rumors, based in large part on notable SF area gaps in announced tour schedules for the fall.

Among the bands whose current schedules suggest either TIMF participation or bad business sense? Cut/Copy, St. Vincent, and Battles, with names like Death Cab for Cutie and others being tossed around as well.

Do these, or other rumored names, pique your interest? Who do you want to see at Treasure Island?

Free show Friday: See the Leaves presents Ander (Skeletal System), Equators (Sunbeam Rd.), Bones (Detroit)

July 21, 2011

Sampler by anderland

Friday evening, See the Leaves is presenting a free early evening show at Velo Rouge Cafe (7pm, Free) in the Inner Richmond. It’s a show of solo projects from members of bands we dig: Equators captures the guitar explorations of Trevor Hacker from Sunbeam Rd. and Ander, who we’ve blogged about previously, is Andy Peterson from Skeletal System performing skittering electronic pop. Opening the show is Detroit’s Bones, who you can preview after the jump.

Video: Burnt Ones – “Protection Circle” (and mixtape and show tonight at the Knockout)

July 21, 2011

Here’s a stripped down video performance of an unreleased song from SF’s Burnt Ones. On Facebook, the band promises a cassette and at least one new 7″, both “coming soon,” as well as a forthcoming West Coast tour. Before that, though, Burnt Ones are playing tonight as part of a recommended all-local rock and roll bill at The Knockout (8pm, $5), with Wax Idols and Pow!.

Below, listen to a half-hour mixtape Burnt Ones made for Mixtape Mountain:

Real Estate - sxsw 2010 - photo by Nicole Browner

Real Estate spent a good part of this year keeping quiet about their upcoming plans, including the move to Domino Records along with all of their side projects’ catalogs. Just last week they shared “It’s Real” from their upcoming Domino debut, Days, on the shelves October 18. Pick up the 7″ single for “It’s Real” as early as September 27, and enjoy a re-recording of another new one, “Blue Lebaron” (demo recording was posted in January via Pitchfork).

The Bay Area has the lucky chance to preview a lot of Real Estate’s second full-length on either of two tour stops: the annual Woodsist festival at the Henry Miller Library (July 30-31), and a show at the Independent on August 2 with Dominant Legs and Melted Toys.

Interview: K. Flay discusses the Bay Area music scene and what inspires her to make music

July 21, 2011

K. Flay

K. Flay is a San Francisco-based, genre-blind producer/songwriter who is making her name beyond the City by the Bay. K. Flay is the nom de plume of Kristine Flaherty, who started making music a few years back while attending Stanford. Known for rocking the stage, she has opened for several big name artists (Ludacris, Snoop, toured with Passion Pit), and although she hasn’t released a full-length album yet, you can download a couple of insane mixtapes on her website. K. Flay also happens to be a gifted remixer (her take on Kreayshawn’s “Gucci Gucci” is my favorite remix of the year), and has landed a soon to be released official Beastie Boys remix.

Magnetic Man “Anthemic – (K.Flay Remix)”

The Bay Bridged: What are your thoughts on the music scene in the Bay and where do you see yourself in it?

K. Flay: The Bay Area music scene is really interesting. Historically, you’ve got these legendary punk & hip hop worlds, but there’s a contemporary vibe that’s more electronic, more experimental. The mixture is kinda crazy and makes for a pretty diverse landscape. My music is electronic at its core, so that’s probably where I fit best, but I’ve played shows and collaborated with all kinds of crazy artists in the neighborhood.
