Video: THEMAYS – Live at The Knockout
August 19, 2011
As we’d mentioned before the show, THEMAYS, “a loose collective of drone makers and beat junkies” featuring Exray’s leaders Jon Bernson and Michael Falsetto-Mapp and others, celebrated a new tape release at The Knockout last month. Videographer Colin Held was on hand to record this video from the group’s set.

Weekend – “Hazel”
August 19, 2011

Weekend – Hazel by Slumberland Records
Having patiently waited to hear that first taste of the young Bay Area shoegaze/post-rock band Weekend after their debut LP, Sports, we are given “Hazel.” It’s the first single off the forthcoming Red EP, out on Slumberland September 20 (but Insound is already offering pre-orders). The jubilant, New Wave-y grand opening of “Hazel” comes as a bit of a surprise, but soon enough the splashes of noisy feedback kick in, and you’re well reminded of who you’re listening to.
We’re stoked to see Weekend next at the Treasure Island Music Festival on October 16.

Mwahaha (ex-Clipd Beaks, Ned) – “Rainbow Diamond”
August 18, 2011

Oakland’s Mwahaha pack plenty of left turns into the electronic-psych-pop of “Rainbow Diamond,” the first single from the group’s self-titled album, out December 6th. The band includes Ross Peacock (ex-Clipd Beaks) along with brothers Nathan and Cyrus Tilton. All three of them used to be in Ned (and yes, I know there are four guys in their press photo).
Other key facts: Mwahaha was recorded with Eli Crews, and features Merrill Garbus of Tune-Yards singing on one song. Also, remixes are forthcoming from Jel and Odd Nosdam.
Mwhaha performs at The Uptown on September 2nd (9pm, Free) with White Cloud and The Horns of Happiness.

Blasted Canyons – “Death and a Half”
SF trio Blasted Canyons includes Matt Jones (Master/Slave, Jonesin’), Heather Fedewa (Wax Idols), and Adam Finken, rotating around guitars, keyboards and drums depending on the song. The band’s debut LP was recently released by Castle Face Records, and they also appeared on Castle Face’s recent Group Flex comp. To find out more about the band, I recommend Positive Destruction’s recent interview with the group, which includes:
There’s a great Lester Bangs quote where he says that “the first mistake of art is to assume it’s serious.â€
Heather Fedewa: I was going to sum up everything by saying that this band started as a joke. And that’s how it will stay. It continues to be a joke. I mean, we love it, it’s fun, a lot of people like it but we recorded a song today, while I was eating lunch, because I had too much Sriracha. It’s called “Mouth on Fireâ€. It’s about eating too much Sriracha. That’s what our songs are about. It’s about nothing.
Blasted Canyons are performing at the Brick and Mortar Music Hall on Friday, August 19th, with Terry Malts, POW! and DJ Al Lover (9pm, $5).

Two Gallants announce two Independent shows on September tour
August 18, 2011

To those who watched tickets for Two Gallants‘ shows at Bottom of the Hill last spring sell out like they were Sigur Rós concerts, don’t be bummed. The duo announced two new shows at The Independent, September 23-24 (tickets on sale now) as part of a North American tour.
Neither San Francisco show is sold out yet, and while the entire tour includes The Mumlers, the September 24 show does not currently have a supporting act listed.
We’ll publish details for the San Francisco shows as they come, and full tour dates are after the jump.
