Bill Orcutt to perform at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass
September 30, 2011
Former Harry Pussy guitarist and local resident Bill Orcutt took a decade-long break from music while pursuing a career as a software engineer. Over the past few years, however, Orcutt has returned as a four-string-acoustic-wielding, blues-inspired madman, carving out intense, raw songs on several releases.
As the video above suggests, I would imagine it’d be pretty gripping seen live, and Orcutt takes to the Porch Stage at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass on Sunday, October 2nd.

Ty Segall to release 2LP set ‘Singles 2007-2010′; new NSFW video for “Goodbye Bread”
September 30, 2011

Part of a welcome trend of prolific Bay Area talents collecting their 7″s (Fresh & Onlys, you guys gotta be next!), Ty Segall will be releasing a 2LP collection of his past singles called, yes, Singles 2007-2010. The album comes out on November 22 via Goner Records, and the track list below indicates there are plenty of songs included here that didn’t make any of Ty’s albums. Like, for example, “Bullet Proof Nothing,” which was previously the B-side on the Caesar 7″:

Additionally, you can watch Ty’s brand new, NSFW video for “Goodbye Bread” below. Segall will be at the Brick and Mortar Music Hall on 10/28 with Nobunny, Apache, Uzi Rash, and Zulus. (Via Pitchfork)

Tonight: Dreams’ single release party with Tartufi, Debbie Neigher at Beatbox in SOMA
September 29, 2011

Tonight in SOMA, the newly formed East Bay band Dreams celebrates their first single with a release party at Beatbox (11th Street & Folsom – RSVP). The first 30 guests will receive a free copy of Dreams’ single “With You” upon entry to the show, where the band is supported by Tartufi, singer-songwriter Debbie Neigher (who performed at Rock Make with Phantom Kicks), and a DJ set by Colorist.
In the fashion of CocoRosie with a little more swing to the step and soulful vocals, “With You” shows a lot of promise for the future of this new “supergroup.” The band’s membership is comprised of frequent collaborators Kacey Johansing and Emily Ritz (Honeycomb, Yesway), as well as Andrew Maguire (Magik*Magik, Thao & Mirah) and Robert Shelton of The Moanin Dove.

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 11: Some Picks for This Year’s Festival
September 29, 2011

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 11 is happening this weekend in Golden Gate Park, offering a ton of free music over three days of festivities. The lengthy list of performing artists can, of course, be a little deceiving, because the massive crowds mean that HSB isn’t suited for sampling the way some festivals are. Founder/funder Warren Hellman told the SF Weekly that he thought the best strategy was to pick a stage and plant there, and, given past failed attempts to stage-hop, I’m inclined to agree. That rule guides these picks for what to see at this weekend’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass.
Click each image for a larger schedule, or download the whole three-day list as a PDF.
Best Bet: Bright Eyes and M. Ward will draw the biggest crowds to the Rooster Stage, but take a half-day at work to catch Woods and Kurt Vile. The former’s experimental take on Neil Young-styled folk-rock sounded great at the Woodsist Fest earlier this year, while Vile’s introspective Smoke Ring for My Halo is a terrific record.
Second Choice: The Arrow Stage for Thurston Moore and The Mekons. Moore’s latest solo album, Demolished Thoughts, is full of acoustic songs well-suited to an outdoor stage. The Mekons’ have been recording and touring for 30 years, and Pitchfork described the band’s new album as “prickly, jovial, boozy, resistant to the bourgeois pleasures of rhyme and tune but sometimes seduced by them anyway.”
Best Bet: Find a spot to set up camp and enjoy Cass McCombs‘ band on the Star Stage, and plan to stay there to see Kris Kristofferson and Merle Haggard, two country legends currently on their first national tour together.

Monday: SF Mayoral Candidates Discuss Music and Nightlife (with performances by Bob Mould and Zoë Keating)
September 29, 2011

Bob Mould – “City Lights (Days Go By)”
The vibrancy of the San Francisco music scene doesn’t just depend on the talents of the City’s many musicians. City policies and practices can have a serious impact on local artists’ quality of life and on the venues where they perform. Things like the enforcement of noise ordinances, the availability of affordable housing, gentrification, and venue and event permitting matter, and when you’re voting for San Francisco’s next mayor this November, we hope you’ll be informed about where the candidates stand on these and other important issues.
To that end, we’re happy to co-sponsor a Recording Academy/CMAC-hosted forum featuring candidates for Mayor of San Francisco discussing music and nightlife-related issues. The event is free, and it takes place Monday, October 3rd at The Fillmore (6pm doors, 6:30 start). If you’re leery of just hearing people talk about music, though, you’ll probably be excited to know that there will also be live music! In addition to the forum, there will also be performances by Bob Mould and Zoë Keating!
Again, admission is free, but you have to RSVP here.
