Meditations on San Francisco: Barn Owl, Date Palms to perform at SF Zen Center
September 21, 2011
The San Francisco Zen Center isn’t a place I’d normally expect to see a rock show, but the Center’s upcoming “Meditations on San Francisco” event on October 8th (6pm, $12), co-presented with The Bold Italic, is set to feature performances by local drone-rockers Barn Owl, Date Palms, and Danny Paul Grody. Visual artist David Wilson will also be in attendance, showcasing “an interactive installation, which will allow guests to engage in a creative group activity, forming a geometric stained glass piece in the courtyard.”
If this sounds good to you, I’d act quickly. TBI says tickets are running out.

Absolutely Kosher Records to stop releasing new albums
September 21, 2011

Absolutely Kosher Records announced yesterday afternoon that, following the release of Himalayan Bear‘s Hard Times, the label will stop putting out new albums. If you’ve followed the East Bay label over the years, then you know that this development is bad news. Over the course of almost 15 years, the label has released albums from some of indie’s best, including a slew of personal favorites, like The Wrens’ Meadowlands, The Mountain Goats’ The Coroner’s Gambit, Okay’s Huggable Dust, and 60 Watt Kid’s self-titled album. In its time, Absolutely Kosher has championed a lot of local bands, including Ex-Boyfriends, Little Teeth and more.
The label will still be selling items from its back catalog, and, if you haven’t checked out its offerings before, there’s no time like the present. Absolutely Kosher’s full announcement is reprinted below.
ABSOLUTELY KOSHER RECORDS SCALES BACK OPERATIONS
Himalayan Bear’s Hard Times, out October 11, 2011, will be the label’s final release. After 13 years, Absolutely Kosher will cease to release records for the foreseeable future. We’ve got one more album to share with the world before scaling back the operation to just administer our catalog. It’s by a Canadian artist called Himalayan Bear and the album is called Hard Times. No, the irony isn’t lost on me.
We should’ve been celebrating the label’s bar mitzvah this year, but it’s not to be. I wish I could tell you there’s a grand plan, a new chapter waiting to be written, but the truth is, we’ve been struggling for years and the only thing on my plate right now is to eliminate our debts and rejuvenate my spirits. We’ve made all sorts of adaptive changes at the label over the last several years, many of them yielding some positive results, but none at the scale and speed we need them to be at.

Noted: The Wrong Words, WHY?, My Second Surprise, Foolproof Four and more
September 20, 2011
- The Wrong Words recently performed a live set on WFMU, which you can download for free.
- Well, shit. WHY? and Serengeti just cancelled their tour. Have you listened to the latter’s Family & Friends yet? It’s really strong.
- Not new but still reliably great: Hemlock booker Tony Bedard’s journey through the world of horrible press releases as @Folder_Rock is full of humor, sadness, and sadness-derived humor.
- Local folk-rock band Foolproof Four are releasing their debut LP, Apples of Our Allegiance, Saturday night at Amnesia. The night before, they’ll be serving on the music side of the music and comedy showcase Snob Theater.
- My Second Surprise’s Ayal Nistor is celebrating his birthday with a show Saturday at the Make-Out Room. The band will be giving away copies of MSS’s Time to Move On to all attendees.
- Maybe it’s because I’ve been listening to a ton of Velvets and Transformer lately, but this Metallica and Lou Reed thing is a real bummer. This 30-second snippet is just as grating as anything on Metal Machine Music.
