Al Lover – “Black Magick Starter Jacket”
As he displays on “Black Magick Starter Jacket,” from the forthcoming Satanic Tambourines cassette (out 11/11/11 on Impose), SF’s Al Lover has a Madlibian skill for weaving obscure, psychy samples into shuffling hip-hop instrumentals. I’m assuming the new song borrows from the sort of garagey, lo-fi rock and roll Lover remixed on Distorted Reverberations (of Reverberating Distortion), but the producer cooks the song’s components into something uniquely satisfying. By the way, I was revisiting Distorted Reverberations earlier this week, and it is major. If you dig outsider hip-hop and/or garage rock, you really need to give this remix comp a spin:
