Video: Youth Lagoon – “July”

October 25, 2011

It has been said before, but one of the fucked things about the new music economy, with its “touring is the new album sales” paradigm, is that it forces artists to take their meticulously crafted records on the road when they might be better left in their immaculately headphone- and stereo-ready studio forms.

As a result, I get a little nervous every time I see a new artist touring behind an album as intimate as Youth Lagoon‘s The Year of Hibernation, but this studio session video indicates that Trevor Powers’ band can maintain his music’s warmth in a live (albeit studio) context. Youth Lagoon headlines Bottom of the Hill on Tuesday, November 1st (9pm, $10/12, All Ages) with Young Magic and Parentz. (Video via Pitchfork.tv)

Muscle Drum – “Compromise”

New SF label Break Up recently released the first LP from Muscle Drum, the solo home recording project of Bronze‘s Robert Spector. Spector’s demos had previously been circulated on CD-Rs, and this LP collects a set of hazy synth-pop songs that periodically calls to mind Ariel Pink’s early works.

Videos: Barn Owl and Date Palms at the San Francisco Zen Center

October 25, 2011

The Bold Italic linked recently to these videos of Barn Owl and Date Palms performing at the TBI/San Francisco Zen Center event, “Meditations on San Francisco.”

The clips, shot by Christopher Musgrave, are both really great. The Date Palms one adds a hallucinatory visual layer to the mix, but both videos offer some ear-pleasing drones. Barn Owl is currently touring Europe — see all of their upcoming shows here.

Jimmy Tamborello brings Dntel to Slim’s on December 15th (8pm, $15/$18), where he’ll be joined by Baths and Raleigh Moncrief.
