Benefit show and album for late SF musician Jesse Morris
November 11, 2011

Muni Diaries reported earlier this week that local musician Jesse Morris passed away on Sunday night. Morris performed locally with his band Jesse Morris and the Man Cougars, but you might also have known him as the “Punk Rock Johnny Cash” whose busking in BART stations brightened many travelers’ days.
Yesterday, Different Fur Studios posted the above recordings, from an uncompleted country album Morris had worked on in 2008. All sales will go to paying for his memorial service. Tonight, there’s a benefit show for Morris’ family at the Uptown, with The Grannies, The UNdead Boys, and Neutralboy performing.
Our deepest condolences to Jesse Morris’ loved ones. If you’d want to share memories of Morris, people have been sharing nice stories and thoughts in the comments over at Muni Diaries.

B. Hamilton – ‘Everything I Own is Broken’
November 10, 2011

Seemingly out of left field (or rather, the East Bay) comes B. Hamilton, conceptualized by Ryan Christopher Parks. For the most part, this is raw rock and roll, with throaty, angry lines that are somewhat therapeutic. Overall, Everything I Own is Broken an honest and exceptional album, all the way through the very last few songs.
Everything I Own is Broken was self-released last month as a free download, and according to Parks was recorded “around Oakland in the Summer, the Winter, and the Fall. Fuck Spring.” True, the album was very much a East Bay packaged product; Shipwreck Studios and Sharkbite Studios pulled together the tracks, and Matthew Tammariello (shortcircles) mastered the album.

Saturday, November 19th at El Rio (2-8pm, $7 or $5 with a can of food), the folks at Night Fog Reader are presenting a great show/food drive for the Dolores Shelter Program, a shelter for working homeless men. Bring canned food to help the shelter, use the $2 you’ll save on admission to buy beer, and enjoy performances by Melted Toys, PreTeen, TINT and La Feline. That’s some good stuff!

Swiftumz – “Angelita”
November 10, 2011

Swiftumz is a project of Chris McVicker, who has collaborated with Hunx & His Punx. His debut LP Don’t Trip was released by Holy Mountain this fall. “Angelita” is the album’s star track, but it doesn’t speak for the LP as a whole — it wanders in and out of fuzzy, dreamy pop and into a hip-hop sounding beat every so often. Here’s a little about Swimftuz, from the label:
The problem with imaginary combinations is that many of them actually already exist. Don’t Trip sounds like a collaboration between Nick Nicely and Eric Hysteric, over which Tony Wilson and Alan McGee would get into a bidding war. Chris McVicker—a.k.a. Swiftumz, famous for penning the fastest selling Hunx & His Punx single—sambas through ’80s Factory singles, afternoon hits of MDMA on the beach, Ibizia before techno, Glaswegian nonchalance, Stolen Kisses and tripping at the Haçienda (the San Francisco one; Manchester’s closed down years ago). Seriously, it’s all present—but like any other great interpreter of Britain’s finest musical traditions, McVicker is just a guy from near Mac Dre’s hometown in Northern California who might laugh if one told him that “More Than Sleep†should be in a Sofia Coppola movie, because he was probably aiming higher than that. Like the best Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk commercial ever, Don’t Trip is your summer jam.
